What is telnet?

For some (stupid) reason, my router came set up with several local subnets. Try entering 10.0.0.1 into a web browser to see if it takes you to your router's web interface.
I deleted the various subnets that were set up, leaving just the 192.168.1.x range. But it's probably doesn't make any difference to security or speed if you leave it in.
You might be able to set up a firewall rule on the router to block access to the telnet server from outside your local network. There may well be one already set up by default.
A telnet client on your iPad wouldn't be a security risk in itself. It just allows you to connect to other computers. If a telnet server is running, it allows other computers to connect to it -- which could be a security risk.
In case you're interested, telnet was originally a program used to dial up to mainframes over the telephone network. It could be used by teletype (TTY) terminals -- monochrome text-only displays. Many routers have a telnet server running, which allows "techies" to have more control over the settings -- often a lot of controls are hidden from the web interface as they don't want non-techies fiddling and breaking stuff!0 -
There is virtually no chance of the tenet interface being available on the WAN side unless it is something the ISP has set up for backdoor access.
I'm still intrigued why Fing (I have it on Android) is reporting the router IP as 10.0.0.1 - worth trying to see what happens when you click http://10.0.0.1 - is it your router web interface that comes up or maybe someone else's?0 -
Your Ipad needs recharged.0
