BT-upfront liine rental out of sync with broadband contract-huge increase in cost

Our BT Broadband Option3 and calls package comes to an end 01.01.14.

We paid line rental in advance up to Jul14.

Our broadband and calls package was £14.40 per month, but once the contract ends this goes up to around £25 per month.

I know there will be better deals out there, but I don't know how to get them:
-paying BT line rental upfront means we will not be refunded if we change now
-most deals with other companies want you to take line rental as well, most paying upfront
-if we downgrade broadband and stay with BT, their minimum contract term looks to be 12 months, which will mean once our up front line rental expires, we'll have to continue to pay until the broadband contract expires

We do need the anytime calls package (or equivalent) as nearly all our calls are during the day.

I've phoned BT but they would not offer us any better deals for staying with them.

Phone BT again after 1/1/14. They're not going to offer you any meaningful retention deal now whilst you are still in minimum term. After that date, you hold all the cards, just bluff that you will go elsewhere and bite the bullet on the LRS.
