BMI Flight Delay - Advice on Compensation

Hi
I've got a question which hopefully somebody can help me with. Apologies in advance if the answer is in a thread already posted that I should've read.
My BMI domestic flight from Leeds to Southampton was delayed this evening. As a result of this we could not land in So'ton as the airport closes at 10pm. We were therefore flown to Exeter and provided a coach for the (over 100 miles) trip to So'ton. We eventually arrived at So'ton airport at around 1.30am - around 4 hours late!
The worse thing was though that the airport (which is about 5 miles outside So'ton City Centre) was closed and there was no taxis around. People were just literally dumped in the middle of nowhere by BMI. I eventually got a taxi and have just got to my hotel.
Can anyone advise on what I can realistically claim for this? I feel a really strong complaint is required, not just due to the delay, but the fact that we were left in the middle of nowhere!!
Thanks in advance for any advice fellow MSE'ers.

Was this a special flight? I cannot see any information on BMI operating the LBA-SOU route.
This is normally operated by FlyBe and the flight from last night BE176 due to depart 2030 is showing on flightstats as Cancelled.
I think this will be a difficult one as they have this timed giving only 20 mins leeway before the airport closes. The airport closure is outwith the control of the airline, The airline is contracted to get you to Southampton Airport.
If it was Flybe you should start with this thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/43847030 -
Thanks for your reply
It is Flybe - not BMI (I typed the post whilst very tired). Interesting that it says cancelled on the flight stats. They did get us to So'ton airport, just not via plane and 4 hours late.
Thanks again0 -
Thanks Centipede100
Any idea of protocol regarding compensation? Do you claim / complain direct with FlyBe or complain about FlyBe direct to some other authority?
Thanks again0 -
I was also at Leeds last night and saw a very unhappy crowd of people waiting for the flight to Southampton at gate 9 as I was boarding the BA flight, which would probably have got you back to Southampton earlier than 0130 and had plenty of empty seats, as it always does.
I know the incoming flight was delayed to 2150 and the expected departure time of your flight was showing as 2220 so they knew the airport would be shut before they took off. The nearest airport would have been Bournemouth but Flybe never fly there and Exeter is its HQ so the choice of arrival airport was fairly clear.
Flybe's flight goes before mine every Sunday evening and in 12 months regular Sunday flying this is the first time that I can recall Flybe ever being late on a Sunday evening, strange but true since Flybe's unofficial motto is Flymaybe. There was no creeping delay, when I arrived at the airport at 1940 the time of arrival was already showing as 2150 so the aircraft was either delayed at Southampton or on an earlier flight or the original plane went tech and they had to replace it, which ought not be too difficult as Southampton is one of their major bases. I would claim the 250 Euros entitlement due under EU261 and see what they say0 -
Write directly to Flybe at their HQ in Exeter.0

Thank you Alan
I've just found the useful template letters on this site so I'll write to Flybe and see what success I get.
Personally I think the worst part was not the delay but the fact that we were dropped at So'ton airport at 1.30am with no taxis or anything.
Thanks again0 -
I do sympathise, I was also dumped at Heathrow at 0230 one morning to discover no staff and no taxis that wanted to take me as far as Terminal 1 which is where the car was parked, and at 0230 I didn't feel like walking three miles to get it. I must admit in that case, the airline paid out under EU261 within 10 days!0
