Looking for car that will last!

Excellent post bigjl, but you wouldn't really put our very nice OP through the Car Shop Sales Executive Experience would you?
He sounds a decent stick, whats he done to deserve that....;)
Remember Gordon, if you do look at Toyotas (oh and don't dismiss Avensis if Prius isn't your thing) make sure the SH is spot on, Toyota are THE company who stands by their car and customers often long after normal warranty has expired, where engines cyl heads etc have proved to have problems they often extend the warranty to 7 years and 100k miles on the problem, and are very sympathetic even if over those figures...but using them for servicing etc and doing so on time keeps goodwill going.0 -
110K VAG might last another 10 years or 110 K without significant cash input.0

Stick with the Skoda. Cracking cars. There's a reason why taxi drivers use them. They're known to last up to 500k miles!!! Tell me she's going to hit that kind of mileage!

Keep the Octavia for another 100,000 Miles!0

Another vote for a Toyota. Mines had 4 years of pure abuse and has been completely faultless.0

I agree that the true MSE way here is to keep the car you have. If you have the other money in cash put as much as possible in ISA's etc and gain a little interest until the Skoda needs work doing on it.
If you have your mind set on changing car, why not look at the Honda Civic? It's bigger than it's equivalents (Focus, Golf, Astra) etc. If it's still too small, the Accord is a stunning car...0 -

Only experience I have of CarShop was via price comparison and they were fairly competitive
I make no excuse for preferring Car Giant personally.
Just introduced CarShop due to pricing.
If they are pushy then I would definately give them a miss
CarGiant are the one I have experience of, myself, family and friends have probably bought over 20 cars from them over the years
The only troublesome one was a Renault 25 TX back in 91 that had a heater matrix fail, back then they had no courtesy cars but they fixed it with Renault parts within a week.
No complaint from me as the repair likely wiped out their profit. Got quoted £5/600 by Renault specialist Rapid Renault in E17
Apologies if I have put forward a "wrong un"0 -
Keep the Octavia for another 100,000 Miles!
Sometimes it is nice to start your retirement with a nice shiny car not polluted by the daily grind to work.
Something you can give a proper AutoGlym on Saturday and cause congestion in on Sunday.
My plan in 20odd years when I retire for the second time is to do just that.
Something I can polish with a massive petrol engine that does 15mpg to celebrate not having to work anymore0 -
Honda Jazz has a good name, but it maybe too small for you?0

One of my OH's mates has a Jazz, and it is an absolute money pit, it keeps going wrong.
I like Worried Jim's idea of a Skoda Superb, because I am thinking of getting one to replace the old Mondy when I get rid of it.
I would go for the 1.9 PD TDi engine, because they can go on for ever. The creature comforts are well up with far more prestigious makes.0
