(Another) tablet question please

Hello
After a bit of advice from people who have these devices. I am after a tablet for my daughter who will use it for playing games, watching you tube and downloading movies - she is 8. My budget is £175 at the maximum. I could get :
Hudl - £119 (no tesco vouchers to use)
Samsung Tab 3 7 inch 8 gb - £122 at John Lewis (with staff discount)
Nexus 7 2013 model 16 gb- £175 (with staff discount)

I would also need to get a protective case for what ever tablet I get. What do people think? Is it worth the £55 extra for the Nexus or would the Samsung be a good budget choice? I have read a lot of reviews and the nexus seems good on paper. We have tried them all and I could not tell much difference between the nexus and the samsung (except for better camera on Nexus and against that no sd slot on Nexus).
Any comments from people with these tabs would be appreciated.

Tab 3 has 2 core's and 1024*600 screen and 1gb ram whereas nexus has 4 cores and 1920*1200 screen and 2gb ram. So the Nexus will be faster on a lot of apps, more smooth and able to open more.

Will a 8 year old notice the difference, probably not.

hudl has more memory, faster processor, better screen resolution, but build quality is not as good. But the Hudl does have micro hdmi so you can connect it to the tv to watch films back if needed.

for an 8 yo i think the Hudl will be more that capable. Use some of the remaining budget to buy the case HDMI lead and a bit into google play for her to buy some apps.

  • Thanks neilwoods - the nexus is definitely a better spec but as you say will an 8 year old notice the better screen.
Syman - thanks yes I could then get the case and lead if I go for the hudl. Just want to get something she can still use in a years time - have read good things about the hudl but am a bit concerned with build quality.

Thing is, if you want to buy something can still use in a few years, then don't buy a tablet. Because whatever you buy, this time next year, it will be slow compared to all the rest.

tablets are like today's phones, not really designed to last more than a couple of years

Nexus 7 is the best of the group; its screen is a particular higlight for me.

I think the decision comes down to how much use you expect to be made from the tablet. If it gets used most days then the Nexus 7 is worth the extra cost. If it's just a fad until the next one then maybe the cheaper Hudl.
  • Thanks for comments. How do people rate the Samsung? Not good reviews as far as I can tell but was that before the price came down and it was being compared to the nexus which was only a bit more expensive?

I have bought one for DD who is 13 for crimble. Having received it the build quality is fine IMHO.

Not quite as sturdy as my 2012 Nexus, but the screen is as good, possibly slightly better and the sound is superior.

Had a hudl since it was released. Good value (although I did have quite a few Tesco vouchers, which doubled up in value for that purchase). Bought it with a case and screen protectors - pack of two protectors because you know you'll destroy the first one you try to fit. :)
Subsequently bought an HDMI cable to connect it to the TV - works well. Routed the sound through my amp as well and have been impressed.
Battery life is good, don't use it for movies, but did play one easily on a single charge. Uses a standard USB charger anyway, so it's never far from a power source.
Wifi receiver does not appear to have as good a range as other devices we have, laptops, kindle etc., but is fine when just a room away from the router. Haven't put more storage in it, but it is nice to have that option. Build quality appears fine for what it is, wouldn't have it without the case though.

I dont know about the others, but the Nexus 7 is really good. I know that he is only 8, but my 9 year old notices the difference between his Nexus 7 and my cheap knockoff :D
The Nexus 7 is very easy to use, and i'd recommend it :)
  • Thanks Sy man. Also thanks Victor2 - my dd would appreciate the big screen option. Did I read there are preloaded movies or is it just a tesco link to blink box?
