[Attacked, on the side of a major motorway whilst waiting for a recovery vehicle. Really? Ok, hit them with your umbrella, and/or large torch, and call the police on your mobile, whilst waving your high vis jacket at passing motorists]

Or...get in your vehicle and lock the doors until they go away or the police arrive, as the government advice tells you to.

Why do so many people not care about the official rules/advice?

Has anyone been attacked while waiting for recovery on the side of a motorway?

Given the unlikely scenario of being attacked or the higher chances of being hit by another vehicle, I'd chose standing out in the cold any time.

Well, there's no guarantee you won't be hit even if you leave the vehicle.

The advice is to get back in the car if you are threatened/attacked, its also to leave any animals in the car!

I can remember one case, but it was many years ago. I wasn't very old at the time but can still remember the ladys name as everyone was shocked and talking about it. She was in the middle of calling for help from the roadside phone when she was attacked.

Oh yes, I remember that one. It did get a lot of publicity because it was so exceptional.

I'm sure a lot more people have been injured in accidents while on the hard shoulder than have been at risk through attacks.

Yes, it is the right thing to do. It states in the Highway Code (thanks Douglas) that you should leave the animals in the vehicle.

The exception is if it is an emergency - that would be something like the car being on fire, not just parked up on the hard shoulder.

really,it says a car being on fire?
-They weren't parked, they were broken down (allegedly)
leaving animals in cages for 3 hours is fine?
leaving them in a dangerous position is fine?
leave the vehicle by the left-hand door and ensure your passengers do the same. You MUST leave any animals in the vehicle or, in an emergency, keep them under proper control on the verge. Never attempt to place a warning triangle on a motorway

As you will see. All they had to do was keep them under control
As has been gone over again and again

Nice bit of selective highlighting there! Why not just admit that you're ignoring the official advice because it contradicts what you've insisting on so stridently?

well that advice led to dead animals
sitting them in a car for 3 hours was a crazy idea
I would count sitting on the hard shoulder in an oversized vehicle as a situation meriting removing them.
the same advice that says the humans shouldnt have been in the vehicle?
