Refurb laptop from PC World?

I've been looking to get a new laptop, and came across one that I liked in PC World. The only thing is, it's a refurb. How risky is this for me? Should it technically be in full working order, with maybe just some cosmetic blemishes? Or am I risking getting sent an absolute lemon?

Has anyone bought a refurb from PC World previously that they had problems with? If so, how quickly and easily did PC World deal with it?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Any faults with refurb machines are dealt with exactly the same as brand-new ones, and have a year's guarantee, so there's no disadvantage in that respect.

PCW has some of the worst after-sales-service you're likely to find-they are regularly voted UK worst retailer. If you are going to need such support, buy elsewhere.
However, buying a refurb is fine as long as you get the same warranty period.

I've had 2 refurbs from Currys with no probs.

Refurb should mean whatever faults have been sorted (in theory), so don't worry about it.

If it's a good spec and the price is right them go for it.
  • Thanks for all the replies. I think I was probably worrying a bit that "refurb" would mean "broken/dodgy/etc". But reading here reassures me a bit. So I think I will take the plunge.

    Oh, dear!

    Let's be civil, shall we?

The post was going quite well with the OP having received the answers to her questions. There really is no need to descend into a bun fight about carp and travel.
  • Thanks Flasg67, as you noted, my query about refurbs from PC World was mostly to get a feel for how safe and reliable they were in general.

I confess that my reasons for not specifying the make and model were purely selfish. Assuming that they don't have unlimited stock of the refurb models, I didn't want to risk the disappointment of finally making a decision to buy the laptop, only to discover they were sold out (perhaps because of this thread). I know that the spirit of this website is about sharing info and knowledge about saving money, so I'm not averse to contributing to that. But at the moment I just want to make sure I get my order in first! LOL!

Apologies if my posts created any friction.

With regards the spec and price though, I'm hopefully clued up enough to know that the price is more than fair (as long as it's not DOA that is! LOL!).

Thank you again for all the positive (and other) input.

If it were online and a great bargain, I think that people would have been off to the site and snapped it up by now.

I'm quite sure it's no bargain unless it's a one off in a particular shop. In that case, it will be much harder for anyone to find that particular bargain.

As for the flashg67 anonymous comment...
What the heck - how rude! The anonymity of the internet - it's great isn't it! Why were you asking an irrelevant question? Why can't you write as if the person were in front of you - if you spoke to me like that face to face, I'd stick one of your niftydigits where the sun don't shine....

I most certainly would speak to him in exactly the way that I write.

Though happy to defend rather than attack. Perhaps he assumed my username pertained to my skills at typing. :)

My comments still stand. Give more details if you want anything more than a generalised reply.
But I'm happy enough for you to announce the great bargain here after you have purchased it. ;)

NiftyDigits, thank you for your kind words. Knowing that you are happy for me brings me no [STRIKE]amount [/STRIKE], sorry, end of pleasure and satisfaction. :-)

On a side note, I know it's scary, but there are people who can help with your painful shyness and inability to express what's on your mind. There's no shame in asking for help.

Be strong, and just take each day as it comes - one small step at a time. x
