Is it correct for a BOS account to show in Halifax online banking?

First off, am i right in thinking Halifax, BOS, TSB & LLoyds are all under the same umbrella?

My Halifax online accounts were different from my Lloyds accounts. I was planning on opening up 3x TSB ones & 3x BOS ones to go with my 3x Lloyds ones, £5k in each & cycle £1k throughout each of the 3 groups.

Applied for a TSB one the other day & then a BOS one the following day. Accepted - good.

Just logged in to my Halifax account tonight & noticed the BOS account listed there. I was wanting to keep them all totally separate. I expected log in details for BOS.

Have they made a mistake or is this how BOS applications go if you have a Halifax account?

Yes, it is correct that you can see you BOS accounts under your Halifax login.

Check out who is linked with whom: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/safe-savings#whatcounts

Lloyds Group is huge and has more than one licence, but Halifax and BOS are on the same licence.

Don't exceed £85K in any financial institution per person.

You can have a login for BoS if you want, but BoS accounts will show up under a Halifax login, and Halifax accounts will show up under a BoS login. Depending on your username and when you setup the accounts, sometimes your BoS login is the same as your Halifax login.

Not sure why you'd want to keep them separate. Personally I think it makes things easier, just use internal transfers to go BoS 2 -> BoS 3 -> Halifax Reward -> BoS 1.

Mine also showed up on Halifax online list, so mistake or not, it's happened before! It wasn't as immediate as yours seems to have been, and I had been given login details for BoS site and used it for a while prior to the account appearing on Halifax. Lloyds remains separate though.
  • Everyone has different needs though. I could've done with them being separate but it's no big loss.

I'll just cycle the £1k between the BOS accounts as i don't want money passing through them to the Halifax accounts or vice versa.

Not much chance of exceeding the £85k. Will be £15k through BOS & i'll be phasing out the Halifax account & only using it for £5 generation as we've now opened Santander's 123 account since we've got our house (& therefore the qualifying direct debits).

The £85k though - is that just Halifax & BOS that would contribute to it, or would Lloyds & TSB also be included (as one)?
To better explain - if i had £20k in Halifax & BOS i would be ok. If i had £30k in TSB & Lloyds, would that be considered a £40k, a £30k & another £30k (therefore ok) or would it be considered as one lump of £100k?

Hope i've explained that well enough.

HBOS (Halifax and BOS) have a separate licence from Lloyds, and all of them have a separate licence from TSB. However, the HBOS group includes more than just Halifax and BOS. Each discrete licence affords their own £85K FSCS protection.

Thats fine for whatever reason your doing that, but note that Halifax can see the BoS accounts just as you can, and vice versa. (So for both BoS and Halifax, they'll see you have 4 current accounts with them)
  • Thanks for the info folks.
  • One before i hit the sack...

I remember when it was Lloyds TSB & i got my Vantage accounts, i could open the first one online but the other 2 had to be either in branch or over the phone.

Does the same apply with the BOS accounts (& also the TSB ones now they've split)? Would be good if i could do another 2 online, but if i have to call then so be it.

I got the same "We are unable" message with both TSB and BoS online, so I would assume so. No problem phoning them up and requesting them however.

HBOS is / was a holding company; it never directly had a banking licence. Do people bank with HSBC holdings?!

Halifax, IF and Birmingham Midshires are all just a brand names of Bank of Scotland plc.
