    I'm pretty sure that Sainsbury's as a whole will have the correct procedures in place, but it sounds to me like the person you are dealing with doesn't know what they are. At this point I would suggest that you stop trying to hand in your P45 and go straight to HMRC who should be able to issue a revised coding notice to remove the W1 from your code. Take a look at this:

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/code-wrong.htm

    Then call on 0300 200 3300, I find that trying them at the very start of the day has the best chance of getting through in a short time.
