Item not received, how long to wait to ask for a refund?

Hi all,

I bought an item on 7th November and paid immediately; I understand from the seller it was posted on 11th November 1st class but not yet received. I've been in touch and they're telling me to go to the sorting office.

I've called the local Post Office (don't know where the sorting office is!) and they said they won't look for it, it'll either be delivered or returned to sender.

Seller has proof of posting.

However, at what point is reasonable to ask for a refund? From a buyer's perspective? If she has proof of posting then she can claim it back surely?

Many thanks,
pippitypip

You need to immediately open an INR case in e-Bay.
It is totally the sellers responsibility to deliver your purchase to you.
  • Thanks oldone; is it the done thing to ask for a refund by now when I open the case?

  • The Post Office have nothing to do with the mail once it has been sent, only the sorting office will be able to help.

    From the Royal Mail website:
"Call us on 0845 6050767 and we’ll give you the address of the Delivery Office nearest to you."

If you open a case for INR then ebay will ask the seller to provide proof of delivery. If they can't you will be refunded. As they do have proof of postage they will be able to claim from Royal Mail.
  • i would not open as case until 15 days has passed from posting
royal fail do not consider a parcel lost until then

    its really up-to you

The 15 'Working' days is for the seller to worry about, it is nothing to do with the buyer. Any seller that expects a buyer to wait 3 weeks for a refund is soon going to lose their account.

I would be expecting a seller to refund me after 2 weeks, and if they didn't do it them, would open an INR and get a refund that way.

I'd wait 7-10 working days to open a case/contact the seller, depending on how it was posted as personally I get most things within 5 days of it being dispatched. It shouldn't take as long as 10 days even with delays.

The seller can claim from Royal Mail after 15 working days, but it's not fair to make the buyer wait that long, unless it's coming from a different country in which case obviously shipping times vary.

E-Bay are demanding ever higher standards from sellers. I notice the O.P's seller took 4 days to dispatch, and are now wanting the buyer to run round chasing the 'lost' item.

I doubt if this seller will still be selling on e-Bay this time next year.

Agreed, especially if it's a business seller. It seems more sellers are starting to ask buyers to chase up items though.

As a seller though it is very frustrating to have refunded only to have the item returned 2 weeks later as uncalled for. I usually request buyer to check sorting office first (I usually google postcode & give them the address/phone number)

And any decent seller would do this themselves.
