Ivy

Apropos my other thread I may need to see my house sometime next year.

I had been growing Ivy up the front with the intention of calling it 'Ivy Cottage' but don't know how others feel about Ivy, I do know that some people worry it will damage the brickwork though believe this is a fallacy.

Most of the houses in my area have Wisteria, in fact I could train the offshots of next door's Wisteria across the top of my downstairs window and have flowering Wisteria this year even.

What does an ivy-clad house suggest to you, pretty cottage or overgrown and in disrepair?

Personally I don't like it and have more the idea that it's taken over rather than it was what the owner wanted.

    Sorry!

    I always wonder what's underneath!

We have ivy but only on a small bit of wall and we keep it fairly well cut back. I don't like it when you can't see a wall for the ivy. I don't find it visually appealing and I worry about the structure underneath.

I'm all for wee beasties, as long as they are outside but you'll get them climbing in through the windows from their vertical hotel.
Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.

My old university had ivy on one of its buildings, but the building was about 400 years old so it seemed to "fit". I personally dont like too much of it on a house as it just looks to me like its badly maintained.

As well as the "wee beasties", you could find mice, squirrels and even rats climbing up it.

I love the look of ivy covered cottages and I wonder if it would add to the insulation but I wouldn't want the worry of it destroying my brickwork.

  • I don't like the look of it, to me it suggests run down and in need of repair. There's a house near us that's totally covered in it, and to me it looks creepy!

That would be the first thing that went if I got my hands on a house like that.

Says 'lack of maintenance' to me, but that's just preference. For every person that doesn't like the look of it there's probably someone else that loves it.
