Toyota IQ

Found myself stuck with a daily 30 mile x 2 M25 commute and looking for something cheap to run.

Anyone got an IQ and what are they like?

For long journeys it tends to be better to be in a larger car - they tend to be more stable, less succeptable to wind / large traffic passing, less wearing generally.

I do a 50 mile round commute each day in a VW Up which isn't much bigger than an IQ and it's just as good the bigger cars I've used for the same trip.

The OP has a good point about small cars. When there's only one or two people using a car, quite often there's no need for anything bigger.

I reckon the IQ would be fine. I looked at one when I bought my current car and it's very nice inside, didn't do a test drive but I'd imagine it's a nice little car to drive.
  • I have an IQ, and do a 50 mile round trip commute into London every day.

I think they are brilliant cars, economical, cheap to insure, nippy, and if you get a white one, it look like a Storm Troopers helmet!

I can never understand why others want big cars when 99% of the time there is only one person in it....what a waste dragging around all that spare space!

The IQ can take 4 people if necessary (the 2 in the back wont want to be in it for too long though)

I've never driven one, are they pretty awful or just small?
This is just for the commute, I would keep the 2 litre Alfa.

If you do get an IQ, get the 1.33, not the 1.0. I do a fair bit of motorway driving and the extra power comes in useful. Also the 1.33 has really long gearing for a small engined car, 2nd will get you to 65 so you can power past transits and mondeos at your leisure (if you're that type of driver!) Probably works out more economical unless you're one of 'those' types that travel at 56mph. Thrashing it the MPG will drop to around 42/43 mpg, otherwise 55 is easily obtained. Tiny fuel tank though (32l)

Inside if feels like a tardis, same width as a Honda Civic and because it has a wheel in each corner with hardly any body over hang, and all the weight is in the center it feels really stable even at 3 figure speeds. It is nice with the leather interior, however the seats aren't as comfortable or supportive as the cloth ones. And the only other thing I don't like is the fuel gauge isn't even, so it makes you think you're running out of fuel when in fact you could have 100miles / 1/3 tank left.

Insurance for me @ 32 10k miles and 5 years no claims is just under £200 with legal.

It isn't as quick as an M3, or handle like an elise, but its the most fun car I've ever driven. The turning circle is brilliant and you can park in places only meant for pushchairs.
