But they're not writing off £500, they are writing off the cost of a secondhand integrated washing machine, which are £50 on Ebay.0

The washing machine wasn't broken,he's trying it on,take him to small claims, and make him pay you back.
They shouldn't, get away with it...good luck.£176,000 January 20140 -
This is presumably all over something worth around £100, how much have you just paid for the house? How much is your time worth to trying recover it?
Personally, I'd forget about it and enjoy your new house.
If I paid a grocery bill and found when I got home that I had been overcharged by £100 I would go and get it sorted and not just forget about itGather ye rosebuds while ye may0 -
If you go the Small Claims Court route you need to get a price for a replacement, preferably an identical one. You can include the cost of having it installed too. Might as well have it professionally installed.0

I'd be annoyed as well - both the cash (who can afford £500 when they've just moved into a new house?) and the principle.
I've got a similar dilemma - we completed a couple of weeks ago and it turns out that the burglar alarm that was included on the F&F list isn't theirs at all but on contract with AT&T. They have even left some of the equipment as, apparently, the weather was too bad when they came to remove it. This is the same vendor who left a smelly old bed in the house because it and to be broken up to take downstairs, and a pallet of bricks in the garden that he tried to move through OUR house after completion while the house was being decorated.
Nothing was a massive deal but annoying things that had to be taken care of when we were on a tight schedule getting it ready for tenants.0
