Blackberry 8900 software reload

My old Blackberry 8900 needs a software reload. I looked for the OS on http://us.blackberry.com/support/apps-and-software/desktop-and-device-download-sites.html
but can only find carrier software. My device was unlocked. Where can I find the software for unlocked devices? The original listing, when I bought the item was here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BlackBerry-Curve-8900-Black-Unlocked-Smartphone-/180802070204?ssPageName=ADME%3AB%3AEOIBSA%3AGB%3A1123&nma=true&si=HIpQ6gsoLdorb63E9UjSOpuigf0%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
2 months ago I remastered a BB8520, and I am assuming this will be similar.
BTW: the screen says Reload Software 513

I open the battery back, and although it is unlocked, originally it must have been on T-Mobile, as it has T-Mobile writing over the back.

Look here>This is the UK of GB, not the USA.

Use whichever of the vendors you want, from the list provided(perhaps the one that matches with the SIM that you intend to use.
If you just intend to use the latest, regardless of the vendor, then what you need to do is to download and install the file to your computer. Once installed, you'll need to delete the vendor.xml file.
You can use an automated process to do it from here or find it and delete it manually from the location shown in thread to which I have linked.

Once complete, you can load up the BDM, choose 'Update', but don't select the first update offered.

You need to check for the version that you downloaded and installed, but which says 'Local installation' If that isn't stated in the Details box, then that is not the one that you just installed and modified.

The process seems easy on paper. I hope I won't mess it up. Especially deleting the vendor file, which I assume will unlock the phone. Correct me if I am wrong

I tried to follow the instructions but I get the message "BB Desktop Software cannot communicate with the connected device. Update the software. I did and still the same message appears.
    What am I doing wrong?

Your wrong. It just allows you to use a version of software meant for another vendor on your phone.
No need for you to do that, as you can just use the software meant for yours.
