Free flight upgrades?

  • £220 is a VERY cheap way to enhance your prospects of sitting in Club World, which is the point I was trying to make.

BA shortest WT+ flight is LHR-Tel Aviv 4.45 hours £220 is a lot of money to gamble for the chance of getting into Club World.

The longer flights to Sydney or Buenos Aires are better value for money.

I don't think the sales team sell tickets blindly ignoring the aircraft that are most likely to operate the flights, it is a bit more sophisticated than this.

  • Is that a hunch or based on fact? I know which mine is.

They can and do switch aircraft around, not sure when the decision on aircraft is actually decided from the pool, but the sales policy may be adjusted after the aircraft decision is made.

  • Of course, but that decision is very rarely made 365 days before when the tickets go on sale. It's not uncommon for the aircraft to be allocated the day before depending on the outbound/return bookings. If two routes are heavily oversold in economy (for example) the aircraft with the smallest economy cabin will be allocated to the least costly upgrade scenario, depending on the return 'loads' and the subsequent aircraft rotations.

Even after the decision has been made, airlines may continue to sell into overbooked classes with the plan of "involuntary upgrading" since it's more cost effective to earn some money than none at all.

We flew with Thomas Cook going to Cuba on 1st June. I couldn't afford to upgrade, but friends of our who were also going wanted to. When they got to the airport they asked the staff and were told that all seats were booked up. They were happy enough (just saved themselves a small fortune!) What pi**ed them off was that the guy who plays Mathew King in Emmerdale was sat behind them with a couple of friends. He then asked to be upgraded and they let his party do so for free!

The flight is part of the holiday i think and you enjoy the hol more if you enjoy the flight. Always fly BA and always upgrade to WT+, NOT to try and get a free upgrade but to get more legroom and a better seat. If you could then pay for it if not then just enjoy yourselves.

Sat in cattle class for a 10 - 12 hour flight which I usually take does not fill me with excitement so I will just pay for it.

Thanks for the responses, at least now I know that my chance of getting upgraded is zero so I can prepare without any false hope.

I did do a search under upgrades before I posted but couldnt find anything so posted this message, I obviously didnt do a decent search. Thanks though.

Is there any possibility of changing your flights to go with Emirates?

You might have to pay extra, but it is well worth it.
    Gone ... or have I?

We were supposed to be flying back from the carribean on a Thomson flight later this year, it has now been changed (not by us) to a Thomas Cook flight
Does anyone know what they are like, what their upgrade policy is or even if they have upgrades
