Definitely agree with getting everything in writing. Nothing...but nothing verbally for anything major (and that includes removals).

Even if a firm isn't trying it on by having everything done verbally and then trying to deny what the agreement was, there is still plenty of room for misunderstandings. Its surprising just how often a firm can be coming to different conclusions to those of the customer as to how a job will be done/assume the customer wouldn't understand something if it was explained properly to them (oh yes....some of us are perfectly capable of understanding)/the person who was doing the quoting wasn't quite concentrating on what the customer was saying to them/etc.

Though, it does sound like the removal firm mentioned here WERE indeed trying it on and had always intended to hike the price at the last minute on any excuse they could think of.
  • Just had quotes from two BAR firms, one local, one national. Both came in at just over two grand. One wanted to take 3 days for a 75 mile move. Persuaded them to made it two days, to reduce the agony of it all for us, but no reduction in price, as they will employ an extra man, as we have so much stuff.( despite massive decluttering). Mainly books

    Hi there,

You are better off calling manwithvan.biz

I have used their services, they are prompt and very cost effective. You just need to tell them your pickup address and destination and they will give you instant no obligation quote.

Do leave your feed back here..

Are they based in Guildford by any chance? Strong whiff of spam methinks.

i've hired a local firm today, they are charging £35 p/h for two men in a luton van. you should check out gumtree.

Got an okay quote from a Gumtree ad only to be followed up 12 hours later with a warning email from Gumtree that it 'has been flagged/reported that the user who posted that reply may be involved in suspicious activity' so I am on my guard :-o

    Hi,

I just got a quote from Pickfords for a light move, few sticks of furniture, some books, for over £1K !!!

Is this par for the course please?

The move would be 100 mile / 160km journey but the fuel cost alone must surely only come to £25 to £50 for the round trip?

    I don't get it?

    Thanks,

    Owen

    Hi Owen

I run a man and van company within Sheffield.

The service you would require would cost around £100

That includes fuel, loading and unloading and driving time.
If another man was required then add another £40.

So please support the small guy and hire a local company and save yourself £££'s.

    Hope this helps you out

    Thanks Stu,

Will update but this is a move from London to the southwest - that's quite a call out from Sheffield?

    Do you have a website?

    Best regards,

    Owen

They wanted £800 to move us 18 miles. Somehow I managed to allow my partner to persuade me we could do it ourselves renting a van! NEVER AGAIN!

We did it ourselves as well.Cost £65 for van but also never again. It was awful!

I got 3 quotes. It was a job beyond a man with a van a a journey of 125 miles. I got 3 quotes(Pickfords and 2 locals both BAR). Pickfords was £700 more than the others.
If you get a cheap quote make sure you know what you are getting e.g. do they want extra for packing materials?
