Moving Home?

Hi,
I just got a quote from Pickfords for a light move, few sticks of furniture, some books, for over £1K !!!
Is this par for the course please?
The move would be 100 mile / 160km journey but the fuel cost alone must surely only come to £25 to £50 for the round trip?
I don't get it?
Thanks,
Owen

Try smaller local firms as they tend to be much cheaper. Have you got any friends or family who have recently moved who can give you a recommendation? I went on Rightmove and got a couple of firms round to quote and the family run firms were much cheaper but always check the insurance etc.
Good luck with your move.0 -
Hi there,
You are better off calling manwithvan.biz
I have used their services, they are prompt and very cost effective. You just need to tell them your pickup address and destination and they will give you instant no obligation quote.

If it's just a light move then get a man with a van...I recently used http://www.anyvan.com/ and it was great as it allows you to compare quotes and also see other customer's feedback.0

Pickfords are to removals as British Gas are to boiler replacements.
If you can fit it in a van, definitely us a man with a van. It'll be the cheapest option.
If you've too much stuff for that, try local independent removal companies (if you want some assurance on quality look for those that are BAR-registered). They should be cheaper than Pickfords.
Get three quotes - you may well find that Pickfords were pricing themselves out of it because it's a small job.0 -
They wanted £800 to move us 18 miles. Somehow I managed to allow my partner to persuade me we could do it ourselves renting a van! NEVER AGAIN!0

We got a full van of stuff (clothes, bookshelves, crt tv, desks, lamps, lots of books etc) from Leeds to Manchester (~50 miles) for £80 all in!0

When we bought our house, we got the call to say completion had happened around 11am. Went to the EA to get the keys. No keys. Vendor turned up with them at 4:30pm.
Turned out they thought they could move themselves out of a four-bed house with just a self-hire transit van. :wall:0 -
I would say you could get a far easier quote and just the same quality of job done by using a local carrier rather than a national one. I've used movers quite a few times, my most recent one was from GB to NI and I find that quote exceptionally high.0

Sounds like an experience I had with an ex. I don't mind packing and unpacking but don't expect me to lift anything! Stick with a local firm and you can be on coffee duty whilst they do the hard work.0 -
Wow
thanks for the many replies + posts. I must admit my jaw dropped when I got the Pickfords quote, couldn't believe my eyes! :-o
Made sure the P quote was 'provisional' and 'approximate' before I requested it with move date 'TBC'
Never mind - I just went here [manwithavandotcodotuk] and received a quote 2/3 less than the big P
Also contacted a clearers for large items I do not want to take with me, I never heard from them again. Likewise, they probably want to clear entire premises and sell on what they clear ~ not interested in things like used fridges and cookers
Any more ideas please?
Have done a lot of initial clearing myself but the last two weeks are starting to tell on me, aches and pains I thought were long gone are starting to creep up on me, but onward.0
