Hmm, thanks for that, I have signatures switched off.

    Nothing like an appreciative poster.

This thread gets more confusing by the hour.

This will be your 'actual' sort code. Nationwide only use a few and don't have a separate one for each branch, as proper banks do.

Santander also use central sort codes rather than branch ones. First Direct don't have any branches, but they still have sort codes. Does that mean they're not proper banks either?

First Direct could be considered to be a branch of HSBC, without a high street presence. I believe it uses sort codes from HSBC's range.
  • Let me try to explain to the OP in terms that even Joey Essex might understand.

Your bank sort code is like the area code of a land line telephone number and the account number is like the local number part. If you move areas (e.g. London to Bristol) you are moving to a new area so the area code must change. You will also be assigned a new local number and although it is possible that the same local number is available in the new area it is unlikely that you will get the same number.

Sort codes are not like mobile area codes which stay the same no matter where you are on the planet.

    Hi!

I've had my nationwide account since 2009, the sort-code is 07-44-56 on my card, but on the direct debit confirmations I've got from my credit card provider, virgin media and Orange, it says my sort-code is 07-01-16.

Your second statement contradicts your first one.

So, you've switched some DDs from a Natwest account to an existing Nationwide account, but the new DDs seen on your confirmations have a different sort code to that for your existing Nationwide account?

What do you see if you view the DDs via Nationwide's online banking? If you can see them there you'll be OK.

I'm not sure why you thought you needed to 'switch' if you already had an account, instead of just moving your DDs. It looks as though they may have opened a new account for you - is the 8-digit account number the same?

Maybe there was an incentive - such as the free travel insurance. I "switched" an old account to my already active Halifax account during their recent £100 promotion.
