I definitely think this buyers' telephone numbers on order details is a new thing, and I think that there's been a new obligation to provide Ebay and/or Paypal with one's number - can't remember which but vaguely recall noticing this recently.
The whole of the internet is going this way - anything you sign up to - YouTube etc. -.wants more and more and more personal information and it's getting on my nerves.
sorry for bad punctuation, on phone and it's a pain for forums.

  • Numbers have been on the orders for years. Likewise numbers on business seller listings, although a tel number isn't required there just a geographical address.

There is no new obligation for anyone to provide anything they haven't done before apropos telephone numbers on eBay. If you don't want to provide it on the order, then don't. Be warned though, that some sellers who use couriers have requirements set up that you cannot purchase without a telephone number.
  • Ah, you're right. The id visibility was removed a month or so ago.
One of the problems with neg is that if a seller has a few negatives then people find it easier to add one more. People generally find it harder to be the first (a bit like the broken window theory).
Ranting at someone leaving you neg will probably never get you anywhere. I've had two (in 25,000 sales) and had them both removed by being honest with the buyers - not buying them off.
Don't respond to the negative while you're angry about it, calm down first. When you write your first email to the buyer, don't send it, just save it and come back to it later and see if it sounds argumentative or angry. Even the most decent, placatory email - when read in an angry voice inside the buyer's head, can be misinterpreted as ranting. Choose your language very carefully. Words are your only tools in most of these situations.

Well I've been Ebaying for years and I've only noticed this recently??

Yes, business sellers' contact info. has to be displayed - that's nothing new - it's buyers' telephone no's I'm talking about. I've NEVER seen THOSE displayed until recently and mine has also been obtained without the email exchanges that I KNOW used to take place for them to be obtained.
