The E10 tariff

Surfer
Surfer Posts: 361 Forumite
This tariff allows off peak between 12am and 5am, 1pm until 4pm and 8pm until 10pm. Ideal if you have storage heaters or air source heating!
However the biggest problem seems to be finding suppliers that support E10. EDF used to support it but now don't. Even if you do find a supplier none of the comparison sites list the E10.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

E10 is very expensive and completely pointless.

You would save by being on E7. E10 tariffs are not competitive at all.
Sadly, you can't compare Economy 10 tariffs. Only EDF Energy (except North East), NPower and SSE out of the top six suppliers have customers on Economy 10. Even then, these three don't usually promote it to new customers.

  • E10 is price rigged in such a way that you would in all probability be better off with a standard rate meter. The only way i could see it being worth having is if your consumption was at least 75% at the cheaper rate. It is as you stated also diffucult to get an online comparison and you would need to phone up the suppliers. Standard rate supply is a lot more competative and can easily be compared. Try adding up your peak and off peak figures for the year and stick that as your anual usage in the comparison sites at standard rate and see what the difference is. Depending on that you may want to think about getting your meter changed.
  • The E10 product is put simply the luxury and by definition expensive end of the E7 product. Its not really a rip-off but is an extra 1095 extra hours of room space & water heating per year, if you want the extra thousand or so hours of cheaper [than core price] per year you have to pay for them. Since the demise of the old regional leccy boards there are relatively few E10 customers most of the north of the border in Scotland. Because there are few customers there are a diminishing few suppliers and no competition on price. Its a choice. E10 .. .. high price and no suppliers and no comparison or E7 .. .. lower price, 1000 less supply hours, plenty of competition and plenty of suppliers and comparison.

I am not sure why people think it is a rip off as we pay £0.135 per unit for peak, £0.075 per unit off peak and a standing charge of £0.23p per day. Our consumption is about 8200 units which about 40% are off peak which works out to about £972 per annum to heat a 5 room including kitchen and bathroom home.
I have checked other suppliers and if I went onto standard rate it woudl cost me about £50 more.

13.5p for peak units on an E10 tariff?

So if you are getting such a great rate, why are you looking for suppliers?

Or have I misunderstood your first post?

On the contrary, these legacy tariffs are often very advantagous if used to the max ;)

Give up wasting any more time looking now.

You probably already are on a very good tariff in general terms, but no you cannot switch supplier or tariff (and that is why you won't find it on any comparison site)

If you really want to change supplier or tariff, first get independent expert help and advice over your existing installation and appliances as neither may be tariff available elsewhere.

Or usually it may be cheaper and simpler to move ... in which case get a property heated by gas ;)

That's a good rate you are on compared to mine with the Scottish Hydro of 12.39p & 18.67p plus a twenty odd pence per day standing charge.

I honestly thought that the E10 tariff was quite commonplace as it was advantageous for us when we had storage heaters as it could give them a boost in the afternoon and evening.
With the air source heating we have it had 20C constantly but on cooler days can boost it up to 22C when in the off peak period. Also means being able to run the washing machine and tumble drier during the day on off peak rates.

They usually have crazy unit charges that make them completely uneconomical!

I'm not quite sure what devil Surfer has made a deal with.

13.5p is not a bad price for a single rate tariff, but Surfer is getting 10hours of off-peak with that to! :D
