Blocked from changing suppliers! Help

Good morning all,

I recently changed energy supplier from Swalec to Scottish Power. All was going fine with the switch and I was expecting to change over completely next month.

I am an economy7 user and was happy with the deal Scottish Power were offering.
However, I received a letter this morning that says -

"Unfortunately due to the metering configuration in your premises we currently do not have a suitable compatible electricity pricing arrangement to meet you requirements.
If you still wish to take advantage of the competitive pricing Manweb offers and you have recently had your Off Peak metering removed you should contact you current supplier to have the information updated and we will re-apply for the transfer. If you have recently had you heating system upgraded and no longer use you Off Peak supply for heating you should contact your current supplier to have the redundant meter removed.
I have made arrangements for you to stay with you present electricity supplier until you contact us to advise that you have had the meter removed or the information amended as detailed above."

WHAT on earth does this mean!?!???

Nothing has changed with my meter, its just a standard digital economy7 meter. I was being transferred to a cheaper rate with Scottish Power and I CAN NOT BELIEVE I AM NOT BEING ALLOWED TO SWITCH, is this fair?

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you apply for an E7 tariff? What was the name of the tariff? There are far fewer E7 tariffs than one-rate electricity tariffs.

Have a look on a comparison site and ensure you choose E7 as your meter type.

(At least it is vanilla E7 and not a fancier one - then you would be even more restricited.)

Thanks for the quick response. I did click to say that I had an E7 meter :(

Are you sure that's its a plain vanilla Economy 7 meter and not an Economy 10 or any of the other strange configuration that were being installed in all-electric houses a few years ago.

If they think you've got a ManWeb tariff then it's possible that you don't have a standard configuration and you might have to get the meters changed or even some of the house wiring reconfigured - check your last bill to see exactly what your tariff was called and how it was charged

I can't see that white meter is significantly different to E7 but you don't really know if ManWeb/Swalec had their own modified version of it. You would have thought that they would have been calling it E7 by now if it was identical to E7. Do they have an E7 tariff as well as "white meter" if so, what is the difference.

I have just had a trawl of the Swalec website to check and it does say that they have "preserved" some of the old specialised tariffs for those with older types of meter, which suggests that you might have to get your present energy supplier to sort it out by either changing your meter or swapping you onto their E7 tariff if Scottish Power can't.

I had a new meter installed 18 months - 2 years ago. I am so confused. I just want to change supplier as Swalec are ripping me off!!

I can only suggest that they kept you on an old tariff structure even though they changed the meter. All I can suggest is that you ask them to switch you to their standard E7 tariff (without penalty) and when it's been done, change suppliers

Thank you, I will give that a go. :money:

And the supplier says you haven't

... which appears to have been entirely the correct advice ;)

Isn't E7 when you pay for night and day energy?
