    I wouldn't have bought a bar of chocolate with a debit/credit card.
Me neither, but I have bought a packet of crisps with my credit card. A whole 59p worth :)

Yes, I entered it into my finance app that weekend. Otherwise the balance wouldn't reconcile.
  • Is there any software available in the UK that syncs to your bank? (Most software does this for US banks).

I have a copy of YNAB but find it very tedious to download files from each of about 6 accounts (even once a month) and I know many people have more than this.

I believe MS Money still works for some banks.

Who's paying? MSMoney can be downloaded free. Is Excel cheaper than this now?

Absolutely, the link I posted before is the one that gives the free download. Excel is significantly more costly if you want to buy it rather than use OpenOffice for example.

The main thing you can get from MS Money that you cannot get from Excel is the reporting. Slice & dice to check your spending and balances any way you want. Once categorised you can easily see where your money goes and track spending.

Same for investment performance although sadly the auto update no longer works.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I actually prefer to enter transactions into MS Money manually rather than download files. This allows me to check each transaction for errors.

Then again, this is probably only practical for accounts with a low number of transactions.
