Money in lots of accounts... How do you keep track?!

  • An ISA is a savings account where the interest is free of tax. So whether you are a tax payer or not has no bearing on the account, although I presume your point is that since you are a student you can register to receive interest gross on savings products at the moment?
Generally the biggest benefits from ISA's is from keeping them year on year and each year being able to shelter a little more from the tax man. If you will use the money in the short term then there seems little point in keeping it in an ISA for the sake of it if you can get better interest rates elsewhere. Obviously though once you've taken your money out of an ISA you can't get back the ability to shelter that years money from tax (use it or lose it).
I'd probably just go for the best short term rate to be honest.

Multiple accounts wont be a problem as such.

Look back in the mortgage forum i think it was for a post of mine from around September. We had a bit of bother proving our deposit as they wanted to know why i was transferring £1k all over the place all the time (to fund my other accounts).
They were also concerned there'd been so many searches on my file (many opened accounts), so it was bum twitchy time for a while.

IFA played a blinder though & got it sorted. Didn't help my nerves though. I'd recommend to calm it down before applying for mortgage.

I recently had this issue with halifax but went through the appeal process and explained each account and the interest im earning on it. Further to that I told them to take a look at the accounts as 6 of the 11 or so were with the lloyds banking group all with good balances.

The appeal worked. Issue became when they accidentally performed 16 credit checks on me! but thats another story for another time!

I have an ancient copy of Microsoft Money with over 10 years worth of data in it. I'd love a replacement which had more modern features but there really doesn't seem to be anything better available.

Quicken is an excellent programme. I'm still using Quicken 2001 which runs perfectly fine on Windows 7.
I can trace all my financial transactions going back to 1994 when I started using it.
    It's very user friendly too.

Check out Ebay, although I can only see ones from the USA. They do post to UK though.

Excel and GnuCash for all non-cash transactions. I had a brief look at a couple of other products but decided on GnuCash as it did the job that I wanted and was free.

I'm perfectly happy with MS Money. At least it is the UK specific version and I wouldn't want the hassle of converting all of my data to Quicken for no real benefit. It's just that there must be a gap in the market for all of us who are using ancient copies of Quicken and Money for someone to bring out something more modern.

For what it's worth I like AceMoney, there is a free version, AceMoney Lite, that restricts you to 2 accounts
  • I miss Quicken, been running a free version of Quicken 98 since......98 I suppose!

Tried the disc in new laptop (windows 8.1) and it just couldn't read the disc at all :(

Could I have copied a folder from the old pc that would have had the programme and Quicken data???

I tried clicking around but I am not a pc savy person.....

Did I miss the chance to have it on my new laptop???

Feeling very nostalgic about Quicken!! :o

I am currently using Bank Genie to run my household accounts, great customer service and support from them.

    But I miss Quicken ;)

Another vote for MS Money from me. As ancient as it might be now, it is completely adequate for the management of several dozen current and savings accounts. No benefit at all to move to another publisher's ancient version of a similarly adequate package.

I have looked at other packages now and then but didn't see any great benefit in any of them. Also, one very major downfall of all of them is the apparent lack of a fully-fledged conversion / migration of all the data. I can't see the point in spending hours migrating from one package to another in the circumstances. If it ain't broke, don't fix it (mantra of good software developers).

I managed to get Quicken 2001 to run on Windows 7 by installing as administrator.

Have a read of this, you might get it to work by trying what is suggested. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/quicken-2000-and-windows-7-64-bit/ea6ada86-9bb3-4d8b-9bb4-cd362e55ed19
