Ok basically Vodafone have been messing me about they kept getting my direct debit wrong not taking payments at the beginning of the year, I amended my DD in August hoping finally things were going well. But oh no I was wrong! I was cut off tonight and i'm being told I owe around £350, after a lengthy discussion on 24/7 chat it was worked out that they had put my sort code in wrong this was the reason why no payments have been made since august. They have not once tried to contact me on missed payments, what rights do i have? its there error as they put sort code incorrect and also didn't bother to contact me. I can't afford this payment, please help me

    Hey Jen!
Sorry to hear you've been told you owe £350 ; it's never nice :(
Did you bother to contact them back in August when you realised your monthly payment didn't leave your bank? And also what about September and October? Surely you'd have noticed something wasn't right?

No I didnt contact them, im not really that good on checking my DD (my bad!) and I didn't really notice.
I'm waiting on a call back from there manager in the nest 24/48hrs as i've made it clear i'm not happy and want to complain.
They are going to check the telephone recording from when I called to amend my DD back in august as i'm going to try and claim some sort of compensation from them for the hash up they have made.
This isn't the first time i have had problems with vodafone, i'm slowly going off them! shame there the only network i can get at my house.
Also I have just found out the they has added a extra number to the end of my sort code making the last two numbers three instead?

This can't be true. All sort codes have 6 digits and everyone knows this, even Vodafone's incompetent staff.

I think you are at some fault too. The best compensation would be if they allow you to pay what you owe in installments, i.e. some sort of payment plan.

Well im pretty sure this is what she said, she was from a call center abroad so her with her accent it was hard to understand so maybe i'm a little wrong, they definitely (100%) got my sort code wrong. This is the reason why they didn't take payment

It's a difficult situation to see who to blame more to be honest.
In your defence ; it's shocking to see it's taken Vodafone the best part of 3 months to realise there is a problem with the payment.... there is no excuse for that!

In their defence, you really should have let them know there was an issue (which you could argue why should you, it's them that takes the payment). Let this be a little lesson learnt ; keep an eye on your DDs !

I do hope Vodafone are helpful with you because £350 at this time of year especially isn't very nice!

    Keep us posted JEN! :)

Not quite sure why you'd expect to get compensation?

Also you said you amended your DD ? How? Once you agree the mandate, that's the last involvement you have - you don't control the date, amount or frequency. The merchant does all this because you gave them the power to do so.

If they could not take payment, the onus falls on you (always) to ensure the account is up to date. Legally, you Have no leg to stand on - and if you check your credit file, may find some bad news waiting there too.

Most systems will only allow 3 x 2 digit sort codes, or 1 x 6 digit code.

It woud be very difficult for any call centre agent regardless of location and/or language to enter more numbers in a field than the system will accept, the system will simply not allow the agent to continue if the number does not match what is expected.

After the DD worked any attempt to change the sort code to another would have to be revalidated, and it would fail then as having too many numbers.
