The only reason for me being on satellite in the first place was no aerial signal hereabouts so I was only on the most basic subscription. Therefore I didn't see a huge difference. When I phoned to cancel, the Sky customer services person tried all sorts of things to get me to stay.
Like offering some free months, to overstating the loss of channels and even trying to tell me the signal wouldn't be as good! Umm excuse me? Same box, same satellite.... :D

I would imagine the call centre staff have targets at 'customer retention' of those customers who phone to cancel. So like any target driven call-centre they will make up lies to get you to stay to boost their figure.

At least they didn't do the usual trick and cut you off to prevent you completing the call

It's probably a sign of the times I suppose but this sort of question is quite common now.

In summary, a Sky+ box will revert to being a dumb Freesat from Sky receiver (leave your old card in the box) when a Sky subscription is ceased.

The box will no longer allow viewing any previous recordings or recording any new ones.

The way round it is to either pay Sky £10.25/month for the Sky+ facilities to be retained or to swop out your Sky box for a Freesat PVR with similar functionality.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
