I understood the general figures are that about 50% of the cyclists deaths involve collisions with lorries although lorries only comprise 5% of london traffic
The vast majority of cyclists, and the vast majority of lorry drivers, never experience a fatal collision.
But occasionally it happens.
It makes no economic sense to completely re-organise the nation's haulage industry in order to satisfy the politically correct demands of a small(ish) group of free-riders.

Is there any other project on this scale?
I doubt it would happen as Transport for london is in charge and that means fekin up the roads as much as possible to force people onto their trains.
Tunnel north to south and another west (heathrow) to east would be fantastic. Taxis and buses could ferry people to near central london and back to heathrow taking passangers and lugguage on each leg of the trip. Should take about 15 minutes.
Or a HGV could enter the north south tunnel from J25 on the M25 and go down to say J7 on the M25. What is now a 55 miles (clockwise) or 67 mile (anticlock) trip becomes a stright 29 miles south. Not only does the HGV use half as much fuel but it frees up 55-67 road miles on the M25. Or someone in Enfield could go to central London in about 15 minutes.
Large Elevators could directly load and unlaod bus passangers without the bus having to surface. Or hell the whole bus can be elevated to the surface where passengers leave, and others get on. The bus then gets elevated down 20 meters where it continues its trip to the next stop 5 miles down the line.
also you could add dedicated cycle only lanes. Heathrow to central london with a 40 minute cycle. Enfield to central london with a 30 minute cycle. You could have more cycle entrance and exit points again with large elevators and no rain problems0 -

It could be a Bus, Taxi and HGV only tunnel during peak times say 7.30 am to 9am and 4.30pm to 6pm to guarantee no traffic and fast speeds. The 21 hours of non peak traffic can be open to cars too.
Such a bus/car/HGV tunnel would reduce overground tube and road capacity problems so not just a benifit to users of the tunnel but to non users too.0 -

only an idiot would suggest completely re-organising the nation's haulage industry to satisfy the politically correct demands of a small(ish) group of free-riders.
however completely sensible people would suggest that one can improve the existing road arrangements so that average speeds in London are increased, more people cycle with the associated health improvements, reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 production and with fewer accidents0 -

You need to say that to a cyclist!

The tunnel idea sounds good. It can't be worse than HS2...

Without wishing to dig myself into a hole, I'd say my shift is 24 hours a day. Since retiring, my entire life is a 'Comedy Club'!0
