Green deal - external wall insulation
We were wondering what people's thoughts were on having external wall insulation done, either paying for it yourself outright or going down the Green Deal road to have it done?
Anyone any rough idea how much external insulation would be for a typical detached house?
There is a lot of information about it on moneysavingexpert (unable to post link due to being a new user), but it does seem to suggest the period for pay off will be easily over 10 years.

Even if it only costs £5k and you saved £500 a year on your heating bill it would take 10 years to pay back, I doubt you'd save even £250 which is about 20years. Not worth it in my opinion.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0

I had it done a few months back and it does seem to maintain the temperature far better than without it. ATM I have no working central heating so my home is largely unheated except for occasional convector heater and electric fire when required.
My lounge temperature ATM is 15.8C unheated although in reality it is around 15C as the digital temp monitor reads high. It's about 4C outside.
Getting that temperature up to a more comfortable temperature of 18/19C should take a lot less doing than it did.
The quote was for £5100 but that was claimed for ECO so how accurate that is I don't know. A 3 bed mid terrace btw so only 2 sides insulated. about 22' wide and 2 storey with 8' internal walls so about 17' of insulation height.
They claimed that the saving would be about £375 if I remember correctly for a semi.0 -
That is re-assuring to here that having it done helps retain the heat more, as our house has no cavity so leaks the heat quite easily in the winter, and takes ages to heat up.
I'm guessing that it would cost over £10k to have it installed ourselves, which we'd never get the money back (well maybe over 20 years we would) with spending it on keeping the heating on for longer.0 -
My property was built using Wimpey no fines concrete and is one of the worst types for heat loss.
You have not said where your located. I would suggest that you try and get funding under a government scheme which tend to be available in low income areas, the types of places where solid walled properties were built.
If there is no energy company doing EWI in your area ATM then it might be worth waiting because there are a lot of such properties in the UK and I know that the energy companies are moving around working in different areas.
EWI should benefit you if you sell the property. Just make sure everything is okay with your property and there is no talk of pulling it down because some solid walled properties had structural problems and were pulled down fairly recently in my area.0 -
mnkymartin wrote: »As mentioned above, ECO funding is available to homeowners with solid walls, the amount available is up to 50%, im not too sure where about you are but if you are within 70 miles of Birmingham I can give you a quote as we can get hold of ECO Funding and we install EWI.
Here is the process
1) We come out and quote full amount
2) We then arrange EPC to be done on your property
3) Funding is then worked out based on EPC
4) You receive letter from funding company, informing you how much funding your eligable to receive
5) if you decide to have work done we claim funding from company and you will only pay remaining amount.
Having EWI installed will make a difference and will pay for itself over a number of years, the amount of years it takes depends on how much you pay and also if you receive funding or not, with ECO funding we estimate it will take between 8-10 years to pay for itself and thats if gas prices stay as they are (which we know they wont), if gas prices rise then the install will pay for itself a lot quicker ! A no brainer really !

Thanks Richie but first of all its not spam ! Take a look at the 20 plus paragraphs you have directed me to read and see the headline "what is spam"
Secondly I understandand the mse is about money saving advice, I think you will find that ECO funding is a great way to take advantage of saving money on ewi installs and been as I can get hold of funding for my customers I dont see my post as such a bad thing.
I understand the site has certain rules, as the site needs to protect its users from the wrong type of people and their activities but sometimes it might be best to use a bit of discretion when a poster is clearly suggesting a viable money saving solution to the op, thanks Martin0 -

Ritchie, in all fairness you know nothing about me or my business, I have been in business for the last 13 years and have never ripped anybody off, im am a very honorable tradesman, I have had a internet presence for the last 8 years and have never received any bad feedback, I understand there are people out there who rip people off, but just to presume im one of them is small minded.
I have worked very hard over the last 12 years and quite frankly do not need need people like yourself knocking me or my business without any real reason, there is good and bad in every industry don't just presume Im bad due to the actions of a minority.
Yes i do make money but I make it in a ethical way, so is that such a bad thing ?
As far as URL im not too sure what you are on about ?0 -

I fully agree with Polly - be very wary.
Do your own sums and don't rely on the salesmen. By all means find out how much it will cost but try and get a proper calculation of what improvements it will make to your heat losses.
Don't forget any savings will be directly related to your actual circumstance - house type, location, present heating costs etc -run away from anyone who comes in and tells you that it will save x% or y£ if they haven't done a full survey and made some extensive heat loss calculations.
Work out what you think you might save and take into account the cost of borrowing the money as well - even the green deal isn't free.
With a pay-back of 10+ years you've got to be convinced that a) you are going to live long enough to benefit or b) stay in the house long enough to benefit.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
