Leaving the fire "slumbering" overnight

    I leave the vent as it is when ticking over at 350degrees and just let it go out naturally...... never had more than a handful of soot at annually at a sweep

    Yep, we do the same. If it gets to hot with the stove going at a good rate then either it is to large a stove for the size of room; or open a window (or better an internal door) to let heat out and up through the rest of the house.

    Normally I time it quite well so when going to bed the temperature is already well on its way down so I just open the vents fully to finish it off.

    Certainly won't be leaving it in all night again! Thanks for the advice everyone.

    Another point, I often put on a couple of logs just before bed to keep the room toasty for the morning (it's super warm!) and it'll dry all of our washing up on a clothes rack!
