We've a biomass boiler with an oil boiler backup. We're due wood pellets for the biomass boiler, so that'll be £700 worth being ordered tonight, and i noticed the oil is a bit low too, so we've ordered 500 litres for that today, so thats close to £1000 of fuel ordered today.

On the plus side the wood pellets should last us until late spring and the oil will probably last a year or more.

I'd often thought about the biomass boiler. It seems to make good economic sense to me. What stopped me is our extreme satisfaction with the Baxi Burnall we have. It's so effective at provide boiler heat whilst giving us the comfort of an open fire.

I haven't checked my oil tank yet but probably will within a couple of days. It was full three months ago so I'm guessing it should be able to take a top up. I pay our oil in advance by DD mandate so I don't get any surprises and always have the money ready to place an order. Just on the odd occasion, maybe in January I have to top that up with another £100 out of the bank.

Yes, could be a case of "if its not broken dont fix it".

We should really at very least put away £150 a month for fuel into a separate accoutn, that way there'd be no big bills as it were, and maybe a bit left at the end of the year.

We only have one problem with the system and that's only that the hot tank doesn't get as hot with the coal fire as the rads. I've got plumbers in all week as we're having a new bathroom fitted and one of them explained to me why this could be. Basically, as per his experience, the relevant pipe is furred up.

As thing stand though the water is hot enough for hand washing and that's good enough for us so we're making no changes to it.

The entire infrastructure of this house was early 1970's but very good quality so we've changed and are changing the aesthetics and what is recommended due to safety issues.

Having the Baxi Burnall with a high output boiler is a real Godsend though. You can buy a couple of bags of coal if you don't want to burn oil. If you find a load of cheap wood suitable for burning you can use that. Or briquettes or turf. It's much more effective than these wood burning stoves which are in fashion now and were I to move I'd want the same fire.
