the first thing you want to do is ring them

you need to ask why this was done without your concent.

ask to be put in touch with there complaints department

(you could tell them that your gran fell at home and couldnt get in contact with you) or something to that effect

I have only just found out when I checked my bill online.

Saw the £25 charge and then that they have changed the number.

Tried to ring the old number and it is dead.

Frustrated that I cannot speak to them until the morning.

That is the most annoying part, that I may have missed calls.
  • I detect another BT Scam: change people's numbers, charge them for it, hide behind the call centre stonewall for a while, eventually allow people their old number back and hope that they'll be so grateful they won't remember that they've been charged. Just like the accidental direct debit cancellation scam, the accidental line disconnection scam, and various other scams that they currently run.

Of course, BT will tell you they're all just mistakes and not intentional fraud, but it's strange how every time they make a mistake it ends up being profitable for them.

"You have not asked for your number to be changed"

Well obviously not or I would not be so ringing you!

All they can say is "it is an error" no explanation.

Charge already taken from Direct Debit will be adjusted next bill (not good enough BT!!) number re-instated from tomorrow(earliest they can do).

Strongly worded letter of complaint on its way.

You're lucky that your number has not already been recycled.
You should certainly receive some credit for this, so make sure you ask for it-say £25 minimum?

It probably is a mistake rather than "a scam" as alleged above. However they have caused OP considerable inconvenience and not only should they cancel the charge but they should offer some compensation for the mess that they created. IMO this should be volunteered rather than having to be requested.

They potentially have, as the calls did not get through it's unknown if no-one called or no-one got through.

Its interested the comments that this is a suggested BT Scam, and the second reply is one suggesting that the OP attempts to scam BT for compensation.

I would have gone ballistic if it had!!

They will not refund me the £25, only credit the account, have told me I have to contact my bank and do an "indemnity" telling them to claim it back from BT.

So they mess up, take my money when they should not have done, and I am the one that has to do the work to get it back or wait three months.

I am expecting that the old number will not be in operation by tomorrow and I will probably have to be on at them again.

Meanwhile if anyone is trying to contact me they will not be able to.

In the circumstances the least they could have done was re-instate the number immediately and refund me by way of credit to my bank or send me a cheque.
