That may well be the case IYO...however if there is a meal involved then usually or in my experience the guests that are invited usually pay.

Even if there is a meal involved - if you were "Invited" there should be no fee unless you wish to make a contribution.

Dependant on how good a friend he is then I guess its up to you if you go there afterwards...its not worth falling out over it...

I'm sure if you pop a card and present in for him on the evening and dont stay then you probably wont get charged...or better still pop round and see him at home the following day!

I've declined completely and lucky for me that I did before being put in a difficult situation regarding fees.

We got invite to the fiftieth birthday party of a friend of OH.
Lovely fancy wedding style invitation, mentioned date, venue, etc and RSVP.
Replied saying we'd be delighted and thn got an email with the menu and the price per head! It was a. Bit of a shock but we still went. At least she asked for donations to animal sanctuary instead of gifts.
It seems to be becoming more normal now, no one foots here bill for a crowd of people.

If I was invited for a birthday meal in a restaurant then I would expect to pay my contribution, but if I was invited to a party then I wouldnt expect to pay a fee for a finger buffet. Perhaps that's just the way it is in my area, but I've never been to a party where the guests have contributed to the buffet.

    Hello All,

The wife of one of my best friends sent me a text message inviting me to a surprise birthday party for him. I would have loved to have went but my work Christmas party is on the same night so I replied advising this. I then got a response that if I changed my mind to let her know as there was a fee for the meal involved.

Now no mention of a fee in the original message and is it normal to be imposing fees on people whom you invite to a birthday party? I maybe out of touch on this one which is why I'm asking for opinions on here.

    Thank you.

maybe she had to pay a deposit per person in advance if there were, say, more than 8 people booked for the meal? Some restaurants around here impose such a rule for booking of 6 or more.

eta - i see from later posts that you think its a finger buffet - so the party host may be paying per head, and so would like to know for sure before they put in numbers for the catering.

If as you say, the venue is a "dive" - just don't go!

Generally amongst my friends, if a group of us get together at a restaurant to take someone out for a birthday meal then we all pay for our own meals and also chip in so that the birthday boy/girl doesn't pay. I've done the same thing with hen parties etc.

But I'd have thought his DW should have been much clearer in her original text.
