Real-life MMD:Slight damage, but free storage. Who pays?

  • This 'dilemma' could be fiction, but it could also be genuine.

If a (flatpack?) kitchen unit, with no address label, was left on a shared drive, it could have come from anywhere - and the supplier's 'return address' could have been on the missing label.

In that case, it's not unreasonable for one of the residents to take it in and store it, on the basis that "if no-one claims it, it might come in handy one day for my shed/garage/whatever." Lots of people are Might-Come-In-Handy Magpies!

I don't believe the neighbours are telling the truth, with their six-month spell of amnesia and sudden bout of clear recall. I deeply suspect that they've suddenly found a use for a kitchen unit, and remembered the freebie which was lying around last May.

So I'd say, if they want it, and you don't, give it to them. But for goodness' sake don't take responsibility for the damage - it's now a six-month-old kitchen unit, not a new one, and damage happens.

  • You could tell them you donated it to a local charity to sell, or listed it on freecycle - whichever your conscience allows ;)
  • This is really odd. What you did was stealing by finding. Why didn't you ask other neighbours in case it had simply been wrongly delivered? Though it's odd the delivery driver didn't need a signature.
  • Young Tug has hit the nail on the head. As I said before, shame the supplier wasn't notified.
  • To 'slightly' misquote a bread-spread advertising slogan ... "I can't believe it's not better'!!!! :rotfl:

There's no way this is a true story! However, I'll go along with the charade and respond anyway! :D

They gave it to you so you own it (assuming it was there's to give in the first place which I doubt it was seeing as they said it wasn't!), they have no rights over it so cannot demand it back, or compensation for it's damage/loss etc.

If you don't want it then let them have it in the state it is in currently but do not get drawn into any discussions (arguments!) about it ... simply GIVE IT TO THEM!!! :T

Personally if I'd had it for all this time I'd have used it by now, or at least the components of it to make other stuff (I love DIY etc! ). I'd love to know how you got it up into your attic in the first place though as these flat-pack units are in BIG boxes!:o
  • How can someone not realise they've ordered a kitchen unit? Surely if you were having a new kitchen you would know about it??? Tell them to get lost, finders keepers. Obviously wasnt theirs in the first place, otherwise they'd have claimed it.

  • Ask for the proof of purchase, no proof=no goods.
  • To neighbour,
"Oh yeah,i remember, you said it definately wasn't yours and we could do with it what we want.Thing is mate,we had a clear out a couple of months ago and gave loads of stuff to charity shops, then took some more bits down the local dump.....it's gone.Don't worry though,if i were you i'd contact the people you ordered it from and say it never arrived and if they dispute this then ask who signed for it."
Your neighbour is clearly trying to pull a fast one,six months ago.....i don't think so.If he pursists in any way just ask to see proof of ownership/invoice or the name of the company that it was ordered from.
  • a lot of dishonesty out there shame on you all!

there is someone out of pocket on this and because its a faceless business no one cares. someone has paid for this item. someone has the loss why should either of you gain.
