Mushroom toxicity

We have had a horrible couple of days. Jake ate toadstools when out yesterday and almost immediately became VERY ill and collapsed. We were an hour from home and had a very stressful and emotional journey to our vet - he was sent immediately to the local vetinary hospital. He stayed there overnight, and is now back at our vets; he's still on a drip but they are very hopeful that he will be ok. All the vets have been amazing, we are so grateful.
He will be muzzled from now on, and I'm contacting a behaviourist too - his obsession with food is not abating and is putting him at risk.
Awful 24hrs, and we are still so worried. Things look positive today though, so trying to look on the bright side! So many folk have fingers crossed for him - it's obviously paying off!

Best wishes for Jake's speedy recovery xx0

Thank you. Kiddo was a bit upset when I picked her up from school so we went down and asked if she could see him for a couple of minutes, and he's really improved in the last few hours. They were delighted to see each other!! He's looking more like himself, so glad we popped in. Just praying he hasn't damaged his kidneys, blood tests all looking positive thus far though.0

He is home. All very relieved. He needs to have bloods taken in a week's time, but it's all looking good. I wouldn't wish the last 48 hours on my worst enemy! Phew!0

He ATE toadstools? I am so glad he is ok btw! but cant get over that he voluntarily ate fungi! I think this needs investigating - from what you said it sounds like he eats the most unusual things!0

Yep, he absolutely did! Was having a great munch until I pulled him away. He eats ANYTHING. Such a worry, hence the muzzle. Although the emergency vet said it was a great help when they were giving him charcoal!
When he was so poorly on Sunday he had lots of little bits of chewing gum in his faeces, we regularly have to wrestle that out of his mouth. I've contacted a behaviourist who was recommended to us and she's going to arrange to come out and see him. We bought a muzzle this morning; he's far from keen but needs must unfortunately. He's never leaving the huse without it, we're even using it when he goes in the garden. He's a bit tired tonight, but has been fine today. He had a couple of visitors which made him very excited!!0 -
good grief - I thought my staffy a bit strange as she preferred 'people food' and my springer would eat almost anything - but not raw mushrooms/toadstools! and certainly not chewing gum!
I think a muzzle would be essential outdoors - but what do you do indoors? this eating 'anything and everything' needs investigation!0 -
It's not such a big deal indoors. We realised very early on that we could absolutely NOT leave anything edible within reach, and it's just habit now. He likes coins, but only holds them in his mouth and will happily release them - we're careful not to drop change or leave it within reach. He likes pants and socks from the washing (minger!) so we keep the bathroom door shut. He doesn't chew household stuff or eat anything that isn't food (if you know what I mean!), but ANYTHING remotely edible is fair game....in his head! When we open the freezer he is straight there, in case a frozen pea rolls out!!
Before we got the muzzle today we've always watched him like a hawk when walking him. He's always on the lead cos his recall is non existent, despite our best attempts, so we can usually see exactly what he's doing. He's very quick though. His obsession with gum is so great that he targets anything in the street that is white - fag ends, tissues, little stones. If it's not gum he spits it out, but if it is he chomps on it and I have to pry his teeth apart to get it. He can smell it from yards away, and heads straight for it. I have become a gum spotting expert! He's the same with any sweets, particularly sticky boiled ones. He managed to get a gobstopper once....that was a battle and a half to get off him.
I'm going to speak to the behaviourist when I've checked my rota at work tomorrow. I rang the insurance to see if they would cover the cost but it's not included; I think it's around £60 for the consultation so will build it into next month's budget. It is something that we want to try and stop, although the muzzle will take a lot of the stress away. I just wish we'd bought it sooner.0 -
gum! chewing gum! sorry, but this is amazing me! I am fascinated! so basically its anything white which looks/smells like gum? or 'might' be food?
Begley is he a rescue dog?0 -
Yes, we rehomed him back in February. His owners emigrated and couldn't take him. He targets most things in the street on the off chance that it is edible. Gum is his favourite though, if he manages to get a lump then he chomps on it and swallows it, if we haven't managed to prise it out. He heads towards anything that it white, on the off chance. It is very weird.0

emigrated and couldn't take him? and it sounds like they starved him and left him to fend for himself first! Roaming the streets I would bet!
awww bless him - but its left you with a problem hasn't it?0
