Is a PVR box the best?

Hi
I think its time to replace my 9 year old Panasonic DVD recorder - its started missing programmes and losing time.
I wonder if I'm best with a replacement DVD recorder or if a PVR box like Panasonic or Humax is better?
This is to go with a tv in my bedroom (Panasonic) in a shared house. I do have parents old sky box (most basic one) on multi room but as I watch mostly free view channels I don't think a Sky + box is an option and gather Sky charge a lot for another + box in the same house. I shall probably cancel the multi room.
I may keep the old Panasonic going too as I'd need a DVD player still but can get a new DVD player - I'd only need a cheap one to link to the tv.
I don't want a sky box, DVD player and PVR box so trying to work out the best option.
I will start browsing the shopping websites but if anyone has any recommendations please let me know.
Thanks.

I would recommend looking at a Humax YouView Box, Freeview HD with internet access for catch up TV, and an integrated EPG.
Humax Direct often have managers specials refurb offers.

I've got three Humax boxes, two with 500GB drives and a YouView box. I wouldn't use anything else. Strangely enough I also bought my first box to replace a Panasonic DVD recorder“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

I went to buy this at Currys yesterday, and ended up buying the BT branded one at £190, instead of £230. When I powered it up it came up with the Humax logo! Bargain!0
