Please ensure that all alarms comply with BS EN 50291-1 or BS EN 50291-2 2010. BS EN 50291-1 2010 are for use in permanent dwellings only whereas BS EN 50291-2 2010 units can be used in permanent dwellings, campers, caravans and boats, the difference being the tests applied. Each alarm should have installation and testing instructions packaged with them and the siting instructions should be followed always ensuring that placement of the alarm allows occupants the maximum time to exit the property if carbon monoxide is detected. It is important that you realize that prolonged exposure to low levels can cause life changing problems but if the level is around 12000 parts per million you will not get out alive because you will become intoxicated in around 15 seconds and dead in 1 to 3 minutes depending on your age and physical condition. If you want more details of what carbo9n monoxide poisoning can do to you, you can contact me on tony@covictim.org.
