Broadband Connection Fees

Hi everyone,
So just deciding on who to use for our broadband provider to our new flat.
Talk Talk's Simply Broadband deal is slightly deceiving in the sense that it promises free connection to all new customers on their website.
However that was not the case when I called today to enquire about setting up a new account.
They told me that there would be a £50 connection fee. I argued the point that in their website the text says free connection (no asterisk, no mention of terms and conditions) however, speaking to the various sales people there was like speaking to automatons. They just wanted me to sign up sign up today not tomorrow but NOW!
They say that because the line is 'stopped', it needs to be opened again. I asked to speak with a supervisor to see why this is not mentioned on their website but had no joy in getting anyone other than speed chatting sales guys.

I was wondering, is it possible to get BT to 'open' the line without actually signing up for a BT service or am I gonna have to pay the connection fee?

Talk talk's simply Broadband still looks cheaper than any of the other providers but I find it a bit deceiving of them to promise free connection and then go back on it when you call to join!
And I must say I was not impressed by the customer service hard sell tactics - very off putting!

Any advice most appreciated
Zipp

If customer service is so poor now, how will it be after you've signed up ?

You cannot get a free line connection!

If you need the phone line connected then it's £25 if you sign up online (as previously posted) or £50 via the sales office (as the op previously posted).

The price is correct as the charge is based on a working line takeover. You could complain to the ASA about the less than honest description, but I believe a few years ago they ruled it was fair, as the expectation for most customers was that it would be a live line take over.

However, as you've experienced their online sales dept, you surely are not believing if you have other issues, they would be any better at resolving them?

Would the connection fee of £50 (or whatever deal is available) cover installation of a completely new line? I thought BT charged £150 for a new line.

So it's not a a broadband connection fee, it's a fee for reconnecting the line. A 'broadband reconnection fee' is a fee for connecting broadband to a working line-two different things entirely.
The BT rack rate for either reconnection or a new line provision is £130, but most providers discount this heavily. Some will discount it 100% if the package you sign up for is worth it to them.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I did indeed use the Top Cashback site to sign up to Talk Talk and now looks like I have £42 coming to me at some point. I had no idea that Top Cashback existed but I'll be using a lot from now on!

    Thanks again!
