Council tax

Can I ask the council if I can defer a payment until March (I usually pay over 10 months)

I think I've deferred all my payments for the last 3 years!

Worth an ask, they're usually pretty good as long as they can see you've been paying. As long as its paid by April they're normally fine.

I can see them agreeing to you paying the remaining amount over 4 equal payments (Dec - March) but I wouldn't think they'd accept no payments until March.

    Could you make monthly payments?

Have you visited the Debt-free Wannabe board for advice?

They might be able to help with a monthly budget.
    :hello:
  • Sorry yeah that's what I meant... Basically I want to take my payment holiday early.

2months free for Xmas and jan.

Instead of 2 free February and March
  • If your council tax office is as slow to answer questions as they are here (Southampton), it will be Easter before they get around to thinking about it!

The council won't allow you to defer payments however you do have a right to request instalments be spread to March 14 (the legislation states this request must be in writing) and they cannot refuse you the option to do this.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • If they have had to send you a reminder this tax year you run the risk of them demanding the balance of this year's council tax bill be paid immediately once the next payment is missed at the beginning of December. How likely they are to take you to court between the 1st of December and the end of March is anyone's guess
