Taxing a used car that is SORN

Hi all
I have just, this weekend, bought a new used car which is SORN and I might be able to pick it up today (will find out a bit later).
I have an insurance quote which I know will insure the car as soon as I make the payment online or over the phone. My question is, if I make a payment online for the tax disc via the website - will I be able to drive the car today or do I have to wait for the tax disc to arrive to be displayed in my car? I am wondering as the registration certificate/VC5 form has been posted this weekend so the DVLA will not have the details that I am the new registered keeper of the vehicle yet and obviously dont want to get into trouble however I could really do with being able to drive the car today and there appear to be differing opinions of what is right and wrong here whenever I google it or look on these forums?
All advice welcome! Thank you

You need to tax it at the post office or DVLA office because the disc will goto the old keeper if you do it online.
You just need the new keeper slip off the V5C.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
if you can tax it online then the only thing you can be done for is 'not displaying' the tax disc; I'd give you 1000 to 1 odds that you wouldn't get spotted for that unless you parked it outside a police station !The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0

If the license is applied for on-line, there is 14 days grace for the offence of failing to display the licence.0 -

You can NOT tax a vehicle on line if it's not already registered in your name.
It's explained at the top of the gov.uk page.
https://www.gov.uk/tax-disc
So don't even try it - I doubt that the site would let you do it anyway - but if you said that everything was as before the new disc would go as said to the previous owner whose details are on record.
So it has to be at a Post Office using part 10 of the V5C that you get from the previous keeper - that's the little green tear-off bit that says V5C/2 in the top right hand corner.0 -
Ah perfect thanks so much for the helpful responses. I decided to wait until the morning, to go to the Post Office and get the tax disc there and then - I'd much rather have the peace of mind I've done everything by the book!!
So all I need is that bit of the VC5 form??? Do I need a print off of my insurance or to show my drivers' license?
Thanks again.Living the dream0 -

There is nothing stopping a new keeper applying for a licence on-line. As in a lot of cases, the .gov site gives general advice that is often inaccurate.
If you check the DVLA site:
www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/home/intro
How does it work?- Tell DVLA the vehicle. You will need either the 16 digit reference number shown on your renewal reminder, or the 11 digit reference number from your Registration Certificate (also known as the Logbook) and your vehicle registration mark (number plate).
- For a new tax disc DVLA checks the vehicle is insured and, if applicable has an electronic MOT test certificate or GVT certificate or entitlement to disability exemption. How does DVLA check Insurance, electronic MOT test certificates and GVT certificates?
- You choose the tax disc you want, 6 or 12 months, and then enter your payment card details. Note: an additional charge of £2.50 will be added to the amount payable if you use a credit card. Why is there an additional charge on credit cards?
- You should receive the new tax disc in the post within 5 working days. If you provide a valid email address we will send an email to confirm your tax/SORN transaction. Which address are they sent to?
- Payments will be processed in line with the terms and conditions as stated.

You'll just need the insurance certificate - a print off is fine these days - and the MOT Certificate if the car is over 3 years old.0
