The daily usage fee-free overdraft period is for 12 months starting on the date you open a current account with us.

Can't be a lot clearer than that.

    • 12 months from when I opened my first NW current account?
    • 12 months from when I opened my first FlexDirect?
    • 12 months from when I opened the account to which the OD was added?

...and there's still a possible conflict with "only one introductory offer"

Thanks for your input. I'll probably not bother with the OD.
  • You are allowed to receive 5% on one sole account and one joint account. So a couple could have one sole account each and a joint account, total of three accounts.

Vortigern this is in their frequently asked questions, but if you did not request an overdraft at opening you cannot use this link, you have to give them a call. You can use the freephone number 0800 302010.

How can I change my overdraft?
You can request a change to your overdraft any time.
Just log in to the Online Bank and then:
    • Select ‘View accounts’
    • Select your account from the list
    • Select ‘Overdraft options’ from the menu on the left side of the page
    • Continue to follow the on screen instructions to change your limit
Please note that the overdraft link will not be available if:
    • There's no overdraft facility available on the account
    • There are charges pending on your account, or
    • When you opened the account, you chose not to have an overdraft facility.

I didn't ask for an overdraft when I opened a second account recently. If I asked for an OD now, would it still be free for 12 months?

Have you read the excerpt in the context of the T&Cs [I posted a link to]? That would answer your above questions by eliminating 2 of the 3.

I do agree with you, however, that the Nationwide T&Cs could be streamlined and be made a bit easier to understand for thier customers.

Downloaded and read all the T&Cs, Thanks.

typistretired: Your tip about the joint account is a good one.
I can see a link to request an overdraft in the left hand menu, but I haven't tried it and probably won't bother.

Given that the OD, if granted, would possibly last only 4 months, I don't think it's worth the effort.

Downloaded and read all the T&Cs,

Do you agree now that the clause "The daily usage fee-free overdraft period is for 12 months starting on the date you open a current account with us" applies to the FlexDirect?

You'd be on the safe side if you assumed that "the date" is the date you opened the most recent current account with them - - though any reasonable person would agree that "the date" would be the date you opened the account you want to have an overdraft on.

Bottom line IMO is that you wouldn't get 12 months interest free if you are already x months into the 12 months period. But feel free to prove me wrong, at your risk!

    Bit of an update...

I applied for the current account a few weeks ago and they stated that they would accept me, but wouldn't give me an overdraft. Might be down to the fact that I've just moved house and I'm not on the electoral roll here yet. Shame!

It's not it's down to not passing their score for an overdraft.

You wouldn't of been accepted for their account if they were worried about your electoral roll status.

I'm considering opening this account to avail of the 0% overdraft for 12 months. Does anyone know what the usual overdraft limit is on this account? I have an £800 overdraft with Halifax that I plan to pay off over the next year.

On my sole account was given £2,500 and £3,000 on our joint account.
