Travel insurance/hotels -maiden name or married name?

I've not got around to updating my passport with my married name but I have with my driving licence, bank cards etc .

When applying for travel insurance should I put it in my maiden name to reflect the same name in my passport? Should I also do this with my hotel booking, car hire etc?

Thanks

  • Sadly I don't have time to update in time for our holiday. Also have many years left on it before I spend £72 on a new one...

So, anyone else who can tell me if I should apply for my travel insurance, hotel and various hires in my maiden name to match passport or married to reflect licence/bank cards.

    Many thanks

Your airline ticket and hotel reservation will need to match your passport.

For the bank card , assuming hubby has a card and is checking in with you so perhaps he can use that, to avoid confusion.

Suggest you bring you marraige cert so you can explain card in the other name if stopped at airport etc..

Fr car hire for paracticality I just book it in the name of your driving license and cards ( never had my passport checked by car hire) and you have the marraige cert to explain if asked.

She has one in her correct name. Women don't have to change it when they marry.

OP, just put travel insurance and hotel in your passport name. If you've changed your driving licence then book car hire in your married name. You might need a credit card in this name though when you pick up the car.

I've been married 9 years and not changed my name, I just book everything in my name and have a spare bank account in my married name should I need it.

The only things that need to match are your tickets and passport, anything else won't really matter either way.

It might make it easier if your travel insurance matches your passport should the need arise for hospital care in a foreign hospital.

As long as you book the car hire in the name that matches the licence and credit card it won't matter if it doesn't match the passport.

Hotels won't give a damn what name is on the card you use when you check in as long as it works, and as long as you match the picture in your passport they won't really care what name is on it.

A woman doesn't lose her name just because she marries, her maiden name is still her correct name and will be forever more.

I would suggest getting a new passport as soon as you come back, if you have legal identification in two names I believe you are breaking the law and could be fined up to a £1000!
This is why I have never changed my passport and driving license, despite being divorced and now using my maiden name again. I have bank cards and bills etc in my maiden name but not my passport or driving license as I haven't had the money spare to pay for the new passport.

No you're not and you won't be. There is absolutely no reason to change your passport unless you want to. Personally I'd keep ID in one name rather than a mixture to save hassle of potentially having to show a marriage certificate if someone queried the 2 names.

Divorce and changing back may be another matter though. Once you've changed your maiden name on official documents you have a new surname so it might be trickier to then change back.

the OP appears to disagree with you, as she has some updated ID in her newly-married name but has 'not got around to updating my passport' so clearly intends to at some point. There are downsides to having mixed surname identities, the OP is aware of them, and I gave a suggestion. That's all.

This is not true in this case as both a woman's maiden name and married name (if she takes her husband's surname) are both still legally her name. A woman may choose to use her husband's surname but it doesn't end her right to use her previous surname. It is perfectly legal for a woman to continue using a passport in her maiden name even if she changes her name on other forms of identification.

As others have said, flight bookings and visas must be in the same name exactly as on the passport. However hotel bookings can be in either/any name as they don't mind. I'd personally ask the insurance company, but I doubt it would be a bad thing to have it the same as the passport in case you're ever asked for id to get treatment.
