Warranty query

Options
I recently purchased an item online which claimed to carry a 3 year parts & labour warranty. This is not the manufacturers warranty as the manufacturer only covers it for 1 year if bought direct from them (This item was purchased from a different retailer).

Is this a legitimate warranty? No warranty or purchase details arrived with the item, nor did the retailer email me this information. Should the retailer have provided warranty details with the item?
I purchased the item through PayPal. Would the paypal transaction details qualify as proof of purchase?

Thanks

Pixie dust is covered for 5 years but fairy dust only covered for 1 year.

If the manufacturer doesnt cover it for 5 years then maybe its a mistake in the listing?

Without know what the item is or the manufacturer its hard to say.

Is it some aftermarket warranty you can purchase extra?

Have you tried talking to the shop first?
  • I have contacted them by email a few times and got no response.

It is not an aftermarket warranty that you have to pay extra for. It comes with the purchase of the item, allegedly.

If the manufacterer only warrants it for a year then the retailer, i assume, will have to foot the bill for repairs outside of this time. Is that correct?

normally it is the retailer that gives the year and then the manufacturer gives the extended warranty, but what makes you think that id the manufacturers warranty runs out the retailer has to foot repair bills.

Can you imagine if this was true how many retailers would be out of business having to pay for repair costs for things the that are past the manufacturers warranty period.

what you are saying is my TV has a 3 years manufacturers warranty it broke after 10 years, so i take it back to retailer and get him to fix it at his cost.
  • What evidence do you have it had a 3 year warranty?

Regardless of warranty you can use the Sale of Goods Act to get the retailer to repair/replace/refund inherent faults. The goods have to last a 'reasonable' time (but reasonable is not strictly defined and will depend on what you bought).

I don't think the OP meant indefinitely, I think he meant within the advertised period, but outside that offered by the manufacturer

What i am trying to understand is this:
The manufacterer sells this product on their own website and offers a 1 year warranty on it. I bought this same product from a different retailer who, under their description of the product said it comes with a 3 year parts & labour warranty. There is no mention of having to pay extra for this so I assume it is part of the deal.
Why would the manufacterer only offer a 1 year warranty and another retailer who buys the same item from them to sell offer a 3 year warranty?
Is this 3 year warranty a manufacturers warranty? Will the manufacterer carry out repairs, and foot the bill, if it developed a fault within the 3 warranty period?

These are questions that only the seller can answer.

One thought might be that the seller has made a mistake and should only have offered a one year warranty.

In any case, you definitely need some documentation from the seller detailing this alleged three year warranty.
Otherwise, three years down the line you may be in difficulty.

    It's impossible to know.

One would assume that the retailer will foot the bill and they are offering the warranty to entice sales (John Lewis do this for example).

However, special terms may be negotiated with the manufacturer so the retailer has an arrangement that the manufacturer will guarantee for X amount of years.

You really need evidence and documentation that you are covered, and clarify with the retailer (not the manufacturer, as you have no contract with them anyway).

This is the problem. No documentation regarding warranty came with the product nor have I received an email or anything from them that contains this information.
I have requested this from the retailer but they have not responded. Do they have to provide warranty documentation?
