AMEX - Retention

Hi there

I am considering calling up Amex to cancel my Amex Preferred Rewards Gold Card.

Does anyone know whether Amex actually offer any kind of offers to keep the card etc. Just curious.... only one way to find out! :-)
If I've help in anyway, please remember to thank me :-)

Didn't for me when I cancelled my platinum charge card.
  • I've had a gold card twice (6 months between them)
Bonus points are good during first year free.

However no way worth the annual fee.

They seem to let you walk away rather than to negotiate on the annual fee sadly.

i have never had a chargecard with them, but i understand that they don't make any efforts to 'retain' you if you call to cancel.

    i use the Cashback Creditcard.

I think they only do that if you're a huge spender. Some people on the FlyerTalk forum - who are of course considerably richer than me - have reported being refunded the annual fee.

Yeh I only spend £500-600 pm so they don't mind getting shot of me lol

I've also got the platinum cashback card for when my gold card deal ends I can go back to my cashback card.

£500 - £600 pm? I only used to spend about £200 pm on mine... finding someone who took it was always a challenge.

I put through between £5000 to £1000 (sometimes more, sometimes slightly less), mostly travel spend, on mine each month and I didn't get a retention offer on my gold. Anyone who gets one seems to be really lucky.

Very much depends where you spend your money. These days, most months I don't have to put anything on my MasterCard.
  • The only 'retention' bonus is the 7500 extra MR points for spending £15,000 on the car in the year. I've just passed this and my annual fee is due in Feb. Plan to renew, bag the bonus points and then cancel for a pro rata refund of the fee.
