Has someone been snooping on my laptop with USB?

I am a bit puzzled but I am not sure if someone that went into my room has tampered with my laptop.

I do have it password protected and turned it off before leaving the room before the person went in. When I turned it back on again just now it said downloading usb driver but I haven't put a usb in and there is not one in now. I was confused and didn't know what to do but then it said usb driver complete. its a bit strange.

Could someone have put in a usb and tried to start the laptop then found it was password protected so it started to download the drivers when I started it even though the password wasn't put in when the person tried to start it themselves?

I do have a usb stick in my room that has not been attached to this laptop before I don't think so that would probably need the drivers and some usb portable hardrives one of which has been attached to it before the other not so could they have been nosey trying to see what was on them?

How can I see what drivers have been downloaded today and for what usb? If someones been snooping I am really not going to be happy at all
Thanx

  • Of course it's a possibility. The big question is would the person who entered the room have reason to want to gain access to your laptop?
  • you can get a copy of hirens that will boot from a usb stick, that has software that will let you reset a password, it boots into the memory, it will also let you look around the drive protected by a password,

Could it be anything else though, I think might have said usb composite device but I'm not 100% sure, would that make a difference?

And is there any way of finding out what the driver was and the usb it was for?
    Thanx

  • if you turned it back on it wouldn't carry on installing something that wasn't plugged in.

Composite devices are usually receivers for a wireless mouse/keyboard. Plugging something into a different port can result in a driver being reloaded.

Who was the "person" that walked into your room?
Why do you think they are trying to hack into your computer?

"USB" is Universal Serial Bus. It is a connector, not a device.
Do you have a phone or tablet that you connect to your computer?
Do you have a printer, external hard disk, keyboard or mouse plugged in to the computer?

Also, back to your story, when you say you turned it on and it said downloading USB driver, do you mean that it said that before you entered your password, or was it once it had fully booted up?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?
