I suspect you are in a minority and your company may not keep the same practice forever. Unless you work for Google/Intel/ISP etc of course.

Perhaps I and everyone I know are in minority but never heard of anyone having issues with having a mobile with them at work - again, I am talking about desk based jobs.

No, not Google etc, financial actually. Friends working all over - nobody has issues with mobile/internet on work pc/laptop.

Where I work we have designated mobile phone zones away from our desks at our desks phones have to be away unless prior agreement with our team leader. In nearly 4 years I have only had my phone out on my desk 5 times.

Our work view it that with camera phones there is nothing to stop someone taking a photo of sensitive information.

I better stay where I am then - could not work with zero work/life balance and BB watching all the time....

    Zero work/life balance??

When you are at work you are at work and you work.

When you are out of work you have your life.

Don't see how not having access to your mobile at work affects your work/life balance.

Management by objectives where I am - definitely. And thanks God for that.

I did have a misfortune of working in environments where one was afraid to breathe... Results in those were as misearable as people working there.

EDIT - Yes, I am at work now. Nobody watches the time when people get in/leave/take breaks for tea/coffee/ciggy. Everyone knows what they are expected to deliver and they do - with a smill, in a stress free environment. Both permanent staff and contractors like myself.

What about using the internet for business purposes?
What purposes? Staff never had the internet as I have said (managers did) and in accounts you have no need to use it at all.

I have worked in accounts based roles all my life, and for the past fifteen years have had to use the internet as part of my job - banking, computer support, Land Registry, HMRC, payroll, access to client websites.
There has usually been a restriction on personal internet browsing - "net nanny", plus tracking and restricting certain sites.

Like I say the management had access and payroll was done by the payroll team not accounts. As an accounts team we never used the net so didn't need it. Only available if you were at lunch for no more than 1 hour between 12 - 2pm. All usage tracked.

Same here. In fact I and most of my colleagues have company mobiles, so they expect us to have them with us and switched on while at work!

And yes we can use them for personal use (we have to reimburse the company for personal use but the tariff is much better value than any normal personal tariff).
