Given that there are a number of lines of work * where you just don't have your phone on while you're at work, it seems likely that in an emergency 'they' would contact your employer.

    * for example, education, retail, health, transport

Yes I can see that but you don't expect to text or ring calls during work time, you can text during breaks but not bloody when you work !!!!

Like I said, the clue is in the title !!!!

There is a time and place for that.

The "clue in the title" are the two words of "lunch" and "break".
  • That's all well and good if it's company policy for all employees including management. Ask them if you can bring in a signal scrambler to help the company reinforce the policy during break times.

Don't you have anything better to do then? - like working?

There are thousands of unemployed people out there at the moment like me but you think you're being hard done by because you can't run your social life while working?

    Reality check..

Did you not read the post at all.... they are referring to using phones on their *break*, a time when they are not working...

As long as the company is prepared to put through all important calls to a worker because of the mobile ban that's fine. If they're not then that isn't acceptable as there can be all manner of emergencies that a person may have to deal with promptly, not at the end of the working day.

I think it is off to disallow mobile usage during break times. If they're paid breaks then the company can impose restrictions. For the sake of worker relations I think they shouldn't.

For anyone with responsibilities eg children, older parents, sick relatives etc it is essential that employers allow them to be contactable.

Thought these were illegal in the UK

I know at some places I worked that the managers had a Mobex system that tied their mobile to the company telephone system so if they were out of the office they were still contactable.

I would imagine it's a data protection issue rather than anything else. Perhaps they should allow an area eg the canteen where workers are allowed to use phones.
