I'm not sure why 'paying off the landlord's mortgage' is an example of the immorality of BTL.

After all, if I buy a chocolate bar I'm helping pay the debts of Cadbury or if I buy a pint of beer I'm helping pay the debts of MegaBrewCo Inc.

    Where's the difference.

If it so so unskilled why isn't everybody doing it, I even offer a challenge, do better yourself, you can use any of my equipment too, but you must ask of each bit of equipment as its clearly obvious what you will need... surely.

You seem to have convinced yourself that your job requires a lot of skill which is why no one else is doing it. In reality most people have better things to do than point a camera at some kids for less than minimum wage.

    Quite simple.

I pay for a product from cadbury they give me said product, yes they have made a profit from the raw materals to cover there time.

Now if cadbury operated the same as BTL, I would pay for a product, but I would never be allowed to open it and cadbury could take it back at any time despite me paying in full. They will then give the same product to someobdy else and they pay for it too.

Yes you are providing a service to those who want to rent, but also fleecing those who are forced to rent.

The simple solution is get building and drop the bottom out of the market, it just appears the simple solution isn't simple.

Don't worry my average is well above minimum wage, I just like to do the right thing and not deny the schools in poorer areas the same service by pricing them out.

Why not jump on the band wagon, it only takes about 30 minutes to film a nativity, the rest is simple so will only be about 10 minutes (so I heard), average bill is around £200-£250 so not a bad investment.

Cadbury don't operate like BTL because there's no point renting someone a chocolate they can't consume.

A tenant however can derive a benefit from a house without taking ownership - they can live in it.

You've still not explained why the latter is unethical.

This thread has been a bit of an eye opener.

I thought of Percy to be a highly skilled entrepreneur, but now it's clear he's just burning home movies on dvd and selling them on with a 400% uplift to parents who have no choice due to a 'no photographs' school policy. Nice.
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.

    Rents fall in real terms.

So the so called "rogue / dodgy landlords" that are being greedy are actually sheltering the tenants from inflationary rises.

The thought of spending my time watching (filming) a school nativity play, surrounded by a bunch of school teachers, and a bigger bunch of doting parents fills me with such horror that I wouldn't do it for less than £1,000 an hour.

Is BTL a business? it involves no skills, no training and no work.

If this is your perception, then I assure you, you are misguided / uneducated about the requirements to run a successful BTL business

Firstly I don't and the schools I work with don't operate any kind of no photography/filming policy. We do ask people don't use flashes (not a problem as its well lit). As mentioneded I do see phones etc popping up at points and really don't care as I know my footage will be better, see below.

When it involves shooting 6 different angles and editing together the time involved soon justifies a 400% uplift.

I will say if I just set up a single camera at the back let it role then burned it to a disc (no edits), didn't do any artwork design I would quite happily let the disc go with a 5% uplift (guess off top of my head) to cover a small amount of time burning and depreciation of the burners (I do go through them quite often). But if thats all they want I will encourage them to do it themselves (and advise them how to do it).

Look at it this way, you can go to a comedy gig or concert and probably piece the whole thing together on youtube a few days later though a combination of different peoples shakey mobile phone footage, but would that be the same as buying the DVD they filmed along the way? the DVD will still sell as its much better.

Now scale that down to the school hall, yes many people will have there footage of there kids solo on there phones etc but they still buy the DVD as it offers a much better product.

I did much research before setting up in business (mostly reading unhappy mothers on mumsnet) and the main complaints where price (usually £10-£15) and/or quality of footage. So here I am offering excellent quality footage (from feedback not just my opinion) at a sale price of £6. Word is spreading and I am getting more work and have a customer retention rate of 100%.

Simple business, give the customers what they want at the price they want.

This may well be true, I am geniunely intersted and happy to fill any gaps in my knowledge, what is involved daily/weekly/monthly/yearly? (use whichever are needed).
