Moving house and switching provider

My parents are due to move house in 4 weeks time. They would like to change their entire package but I'm not sure of the best way of doing it. They already own and have access to their new house so can do work in advance if required.
Current house:
- BT landline and phone number
- Pipex broadband
- XXXXXX @ dsl.pipex. com email address
New house:
- BT phoneline. No known number. Cables in loft but no faceplate so unsure if there's a dial tone
They would like to:
1 - Port their BT number to their new house
2 - Cancel pipex broadband at their old place
3 - Get BT infinity, calls, line rental and TV package at their new place
4 - Keep their old email address
What's the best way to go about doing this? Should they wait until they've moved in, then port the number, then sign up for BT? I imagine that's the easiest way to do it, but I also imagine there will be a period of time of a few weeks when they'll have no phone/internet and their new place. Is there any way this can be planned in advance to make the switch-over a little more instant?
With regards to point #4, is this even possible? I didn't think it was but apparently one of my dad's friends has done it. I'm not familiar with it as I've always used hotmail/gmail.
Thanks for any help.

They won't be able to port their number if a new owner at theor old house has taken over the line.
They need to discuss with BT (who they want to supply the line at the new house) now how to go about a move and keep their number.
Hopefully BT will do them a deal to take the full monty at their new house, but again, they should start discussing that with them before they move.
They just need to give notice to cancel pipex so that it finishes at the same time they move out.
Ask pipex if and how to keep the email address.0 -
Thanks for the help Quentin.
They're still living in their old house at the minute (so they can do whatever they like at either property for the next 4 weeks), so they don't need to worry about the new owners 'inheriting' the number.
I agree this would be a lot easier to sort out by phoning BT and arranging it all over the phone, but if they do it online they can get nearly £150 cashback.0 -

I don't see how they could keep their number if they "do it online they can get nearly £150 cashback".
BT have a Moving Home facility to hopefully make things go smoothly see here.
I doubt if they will be able to keep their old Pipex e-mail unless they changed to the company that took over Pipex. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Thanks for the link espresso. I've just had a separate thought about the whole cashback deal - it says new customers only. Seeing as they are customers (albeit line rental/calls only), I don't think they will be able to get the cashback anyway, so it might be easier for them to just ring up and speak to someone about it anyway.0 -
No-with BT it is invariably easier to do it online. That way you don't have the call centre hell, and you know exactly what you have asked for, and a record of it.
Log into your online account and request a home move from there, as espresso suggested. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

That bad eh? Even for technophobes like my parents?! I can guarantee they don't know their account number so that will be the next challenge on the list0 -

Taking the number with them to the new address isn't porting the number, if the new address is in the same exchange area as the current address then BT can provide the number at the new address, they would just have to give notice to Pipex to cease the broadband at the old address, if the new address is in an Infinity area and there is capacity then it can be added to the line, you would have to check with Pipex but it's unlikely the email address would be kept if the broadband account ceased
They need to speak to BT home mover team, but the old address and new address can be linked together so the number would move from the old to new address on an agreed date, provided they are in the same exchange area0
