job searching

Does anyone think after a while of being unemployed, the failed applications and interviews that it sounds weird to start doubting your ability to do any job ?

I have an NVQ in admin, BTEC National Certificate in Retail, AS Level in Business StudiesFinished 6th form in June 2008. Got a job at Sports Direct as a sales assistant in 2009 for 4 months, but was only a zero hour contract. Then in 2012 work programme provider took me on for 4 months as an admin assistant, which finished in August.

On the work programme, since I finished there in august been attending weekly jobsearch sessions. Had a couple of interviews, but not loads.Have 4 months left on the work programme and at the point where I look at jobs which I probably do have the skills for, but due to failed interviews I doubt my ability to even do them

Depression and anxiety could be a contributing factor I guess. On tablets for that.!

I don't know whether to mention this to my work programme advisor who is good at giving advice, maybe see if I can get more help from her with jobsearch as at the moment do feel quite negative

Or would it be a strange pointless thing to mention

I even turned to gambling a few weeks ago to try and get some enjoyment as feel so hopless. Got into problems, but luckily family helped me out and straight wiyh bills etc now

    Hmmmmmm......
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...
  • Have or can you try getting counselling? to go with the meds maybe see GP again if you feel there not doing anything for you?
I think it is hard but you must keep your pecker up, and go for a job you've really enjoyed from the past, corny keep thinking it will happen, have you thought about volunteering or if under 24 I think seeing if there is any more help in the way of these (I'm sure this is not going to be worded right forgive me!) self boost programme schemes? grab all the help you can muster and don't worry you are not alone we've all had our vices to see us through this, mine way more embarrassing x

    What's with the Hmmmm ???
  • I think a big problem for me as well as fast losing faith in my ability to do even jobs I'm qualified for, is interviews. There's jobs at supermarkets I wouldn't mind doing, but don't see myself getting through the interview. A lot of supermarket ones a group interviews which terrifies me

Work Programme have said they will help with interviews, but you feel daft asking for preparation help with each one that you get. I think that's the only way to give me the confidence beforehand, because each failed one makes the next one for me ten times worser

You should find that voluntary work will remind you of your capabilities and increase your confidence.

It's not you but something another poster advised re a form of medication that was suggested don't worry - I now see the post has been removed gingernutty wasn't always post no 2! if you get me, but more responding to them

Have you tried a group interview before? to be honest I really enjoy it, it takes the heat of you I've found, safety in numbers and all that, once attended one of these recruitment nights it was awesome as I only had to answer 1 question ;)

I feel exactly the same. I think if I am ever lucky enough to get a job I will be useless at it and they will throw me out.
I haven't had an interview in ages. Every interview I've had I've failed. I can't stick it any more. I hate being at my age with no proper career, no job and nothing to show for my life. I try so hard to get work but it gets me nowhere. I look on the jobcentre website and all the other job sites every day. The last 2 weeks there was nothing for me to even apply for. I'm not being picky. I would take anything. Even today I saw on the agency website a local hotel is looking for food and beverage staff for 5 hours a week, temporary and they want 1 year of experience:mad:

I can't even get voluntary work. There is a centre in my town that deals with all the voluntary jobs and I went in there and registered and spoke to them, but they never bothered about me. I contacted them again a couple of times and they still said the same. Another place interviewed me for voluntary work and they didn't even bother to contact me to reject me, just ignored me instead. I always check local noticeboards to see if there's anything voluntary but there's nothing about.

Sometimes I think I just have to accept I am unemployable and will never have a job. I see my friends moving on with their lives, getting proper careers, and all, not like me I'm stuck, a jobless failure forever.
  • I have until the end of Feb on the work programme, do you think if I start to communicate more with my advisor and ask for help if I need it on anything, and apply for all full time / part time jobs I'm capable of that it would be possible to get a job before end of February

    Or is that being unrealistic

I had one group interview at David Lloyd and it was awful. I don't have much confidence, when it comes to telling people about myself I always feel like they will laugh at what I have to say.

Interview and application questions are a real pain, some I knoe straight away what to put. Others I struggle with.

Aw don't feel like that. They won't want to laugh at you.
