Card processing machines for my small business

I run a small business which at the moment only accepts cash, I'm looking to get a card processing machine. I've come across a good deal from Cardsave but their reviews are really bad, so I'm looking for alternatives.

Anyone know of the best deal or which company to go for at the moment?

  • It depends what type of business you run but have you looked at SumUp?

    https://sumup.co.uk/
  • The video for sumup looks good I will look into further

I run an Indian takeaway business, ideally I'd like to have a counter top terminal so I can process payments over the phone and over the counter.

    Hope that helps

For cardholder present transactions Worldpay zinc integrates with your phone, how much do you expect to put through the system each year?

Since I'm new to card processing my best guess would be up to £10k annually.

Worldpay zinc and sumup are great deals for startup businesses. I'm looking for something that would allow me to accept payments over the phone.

Worldpay may have an advantage in that it's a trusted brand name, anyone who's used a credit card online since the 1990's may recognise the name. They have been around for ages and have everything slick. It may have a perceptual advantage to customers as opposed to effectively giving a random stranger their card details, but the schemes are generally pretty similar overall. £10k/year is fine, just checking you weren't hitting the cap on transactions when you have to go to a fully serviced merchant account.

If you're happy to have a laptop / tablet / mobile with you, you can use the worldpay Web portal to take payments over the phone, think paypal virtual terminal but free.

Give me a message if you want to get the worldpay pinpad for £29.99 instead of £59.99 and transaction fees of 1.95% instead of 2.75%

Been using CardSave for a while and they've been fine. Sales rep is always contactable on his mobile and returns calls quickly and the support side have been really, really helpful in getting set up/teething problems/etc. They're very open to negotiation too. We got transaction fees down to 1.16% (higher for American Express) but we're banking £100k+ pa with them.
  • Just so everybody here is clear - SumUp's solution DOES NOT USE A CARD READER for Visa. It's a virtual terminal so you can take a payment by entering card details in a web browser on either your mobile or the customer's. It does say that on their website, about six links deep in the ninth paragraph, but it's not obvious at all until it arrives.

All that said, it works, but we haven't taken any big payments on VISA yet - people seem happy to do it for small ones, and it does take a while to explain it and get through the faff. Nobody's actually refused yet but had some close calls.

Me too. They were helpful in setting up my site and on a few occasions dealing with problems with individual transactions. Phoning them is usually easy.

The trouble with the internet is that you can always find people who've had problems with any company. I suspect that the reality is that most companies are basically fine for the majority, but if you do experience a serious or unresolved problem it's a disaster for you. I'm sure my opinion of Cardsave would change radically if I had had a major problem.
