Not when it's burning properly. If the wood is smoking, then it's just smouldering rather than burning.If it sticks, force it.

I find the chimney smokes a lot when first lit then once up and running you can barely see any smoke. Our house is amongst a group of about 8 old houses all with chimneys, not smoke controlled, so you can always smell the smoke from somewhere it's not an unpleasant smell. There isn't always any visible smoke coming from the chimneys though.0
